A cloudy day at Streatham & Marlboro Cricket Club sparked riveting conversation about the possibility of rain and the merits of various weather apps ahead of the toss. A last minute change to the Exiles line up also left skipper Jibran Ahmed having to rejig the batting order he’d so dutifully compiled on his phone the night before.
Predicting an early shower, Jibs put Exiles in to bat in an effort to avoid bowling in the rain. Seconds after the ross, the heavens opened up, leaving him rather pleased with his choice.
Shahid and Ajmal opened the innings steadily, picking off runs from the bad balls. Shahid eventually fell victim to LBW bringing Yahya to the crease, who along with Ajmal began notching up the boundaries. A strong partnership was forming until Ajmal gloved one to the keeper in the 13th over.
A change of bowling then brought on a grippy spinner who caught and bowled both Andy and Yayah in consecutive overs. At 88-4 with 16 overs to spare, 150 was looking like a challenge, however Jamil and newcomer Ishaq combined aggressive hitting with sensible stroke playing, adding 69 runs between them before Jamil was eventually bowled, much to the relief of the opposition.
At 157-5, 200 was now looking good. Unfortunately, the next 5 wickets fell for just 15 runs, leaving Exiles 172 all out. Just below par, but something to bowl at.
The bowling got off to a shaky start with the opposition’s left hand opener starting aggressively and losing the ball on the first delivery. Luck turned our way however as Siyar and Naren each scalped two wickets a piece, leaving the opposition 4 down after just 10 overs.
The left hand opener however was getting comfortable and dispatching boundary after boundary as Exiles struggled to contain him. Jibs brought himself on to stem the flow of runs, and eventually had the lefty caught on the boundary by Naren on 76. By this point however, we’d gone 10 overs without a wicket, during which Streatham build a solid partnership and scored heavily.
Containing runs wasn’t an option at this point; wickets were needed to win this match. Between bouts of rain, a couple of bowling changes brought hope as Yahya and Ajmal picked up a wicket each, however it was too little too late as Streatham & Marlboro crossed the finish line with 3 wickets to spare and 5 overs in hand.
We were probably 30 runs too short with the bat and could have done with holding on to a couple of dropped catches in the early overs. Luck wasn’t on our side today, but there were some great performances with bat and bowl which we hope to see more of through the rest of the season.
