“Man down” was the cry from captain Bernard the night before the game due to a dodgy back and so up stepped Aloysius for his first ever captaincy for the exiles (or any club for that matter). It was a cracking day for cricket, though that also meant that half of London was out and about which due to traffic resulted in only four exiles turning up on time for the 1pm start. Consequently, Aloysius won the coin toss by default (They all count!) and Mark and Keith duly padded up to get the innings underway.
The first two wickets (Mark and Ansar) fell with only 12 on the board before Shahid joined Keith in the middle to both consolidate and push the tempo along with a succession of boundaries coming in short shrift. After a quickfire 29 in as many balls, unfortunately Shahid departed after being bowled and was replaced by Ajmal and thereafter Jamil, both hitting boundaries before being undone relatively quickly.
Aloysius came in next to slow the attrition of wickets which was beginning to work, before an uncharacteristic rush of blood did for Keith (21). Joining the action next was the inform Wingfield. After a boundary each from Wingfield and Aloysius it was Aloysius mistiming an on-drive resulting in a well taken catch at mid-on departing after an otherwise solid start on 14 and ending the partnership.
Evan headed into the middle and played his part as Wingfield took on the bowling with confidence, delivering some belligerent trademark treatment. Whilst dropped a few times, it was noted that he took full advantage by smashing the next ball to the boundary in each case. Unfortunately, he fell four short of what would have been his second half century on the bounce, and no one else really troubled the scorers with Exiles finishing on 142 all out.
After a tasty tea, Exiles strode onto the field with multiple bowling options. Ansar started spritely and was a handful for the openers. Deepak struggled a little early on before getting into more of a groove. Wickets were shared around, and bowling changes were rewarded with inroads into the Whalers batting order too.
Ansar and Shahid were both in good form with the ball could have had multiple wickets between them (As it was, they finished their allotted overs with 2 and 1 respectively), and Ajmal bowled well for his two wickets.
Given the low-ish target, the bowling and fielding was solid and made the game competitive, but not enough for the Whalers who finished the job with a little over 4 overs to spare. The game could maybe have been a little different if the Exiles batters had added perhaps 30 or so to the total.
Next up is Merton !
