Energy Exiles hosted Ploughmans at Abbey Recreation Ground. When I arrived at the ground 20 minutes before the start, none of the usual Exiles were there. However, everyone turned up before the scheduled start and Phil Ling went out for the toss with his opposite number in the Ploughmans. The pitch looked green, and on winning the toss, Phil chose to bowl first.
Jibran Ahmed and Naren Patel opened the bowling with Jibran working up a good pace and Naren bowling an excellent off-stump line. The early Ploughmans batsmen struggled with Naren taking the first three wickets, the first to a plumb lbw shout, the second to a fine catch at mid-wicket by Sahir, and the third bowled by a fine delivery which hit the top of off-stump.
Jibran had the obdurate opening batsman, Tailor, lbw and Ploughmans were in some trouble at about 50-odd for four. However, this brought together Mills and Pretorious, who put on over 130 despite Pretorious suffering from a hangover.
Yayha Khan and Andy Wingfield both bowled tidily, and then Joseph Bradshaw and Phil Ling did their best to keep the runs down before Joseph finally dismissed Mills for 68 through a splendid catch by Wingfield at deep mid-on.
Shahid Iqbal (2 for 10) and the returning Wingfield made short work of the rest of the Ploughmans batting order as the innings closed on 202 all out. Energy Exiles bowled and fielded very well and only Mills and Pretorious batted with much confidence against them.
Ray Clarke fell lbw early in the Exiles’ reply, but after a slowish start, Shahid Iqbal played some splendid strokes with fine support from Sahir Khurshid. Shahid was dismissed for a fine 37 and Mark Bradshaw started brightly with an early boundary before Sahir also fell caught at short mid-wicket just before drinks for a steady 17.
The Exiles were still very much in the game with Andy Wingfield and Mark Bradshaw at the crease, but Bradshaw struggled to get the spinners away and eventually fell trying to play Stephenson away to the leg-side.
Disaster then followed as both Jibran and Yahya were bowled in the same over leaving the Exiles at 83 for 6. Captain Ling joined Wingfield and defended very well while looking to rotate the strike while Andy played some bold shots against the spinners in a stand of 45.
Phil was dismissed by the returning opening bowler and Joseph Bradshaw went out to bat telling his Dad that a chase of 70 in six overs was achievable. However, after cover driving his first ball for a single, Joseph was then caught at slip attempting a similar shot. Naren then missed an attempted bully shot to bring the innings to an end with Andy left unbeaten on an excellent 48.
The partnership of Mills and Pretorious was the key factor in this game – if either had been dismissed early, the Exiles would probably have won. Neither batsman gave an early chance, though Ling came within a whisker of bowling Mills. The Ploughmans were also excellent opponents who played the game in a good spirit.
Man of the match was Andy Wingfield, though he was pushed close by Shahid Iqbal.
