The Exiles were comprehensively outplayed by SLOBs in searing heat at Beddington CC.
The Exiles had the benefit of winning the toss on another scorching day in south London. While we are traditionally a stronger bowling side, it would have been counterintuitive given conditions (and possibly detrimental to the skipper's wellbeing) if he had chosen to field first; As it turns out, winning the toss was about the only thing that went right for the Exiles all afternoon.
Slobs bowled reasonably accurately and fielded well in the parched environs of Beddington's second pitch; Such has been the effect of nearly six weeks uninterrupted sunshine that the outfield was lightning fast, meaning anything even half timed would run for four once beating the fielders. However Exiles could not make use of such conditions, and a succession of players gave their wickets away in rather profligate fashion.
Lone resistance was provided by Ray Clarke, Beddington CC veteran standing in for the Exiles, who valiantly plugged away for a solid 43, but could find no-one to stay with him. A longish tail meant the Exiles were always up against it once the middle order evaporated, and being bowled out for 95 was never going to properly tax an organised opposition.
After a good tea, the Exiles came out to restore some pride and opening bowlers Naren Patel and Bilal Musakhel did their best to cause the SLOBs batters some problems. Musakhel in particular bowled with good pace on a probing length, and was unlucky not to take a wicket as the SLOBs batters were clearly discomforted by his spell.
However, having weathered the early storm, they began to open their shoulders and brought up a trouble-free 50 inside 15 overs. Shahid Iqbal, on at first change, gained a solitary consolation wicket courtesy of a skier to short extra cover, but a few solid biffs by the number 3 meant the game was over just after drinks.
Next up is Whalers at home, at Dundonald Road.
