In typical exiles fashion most of the team were late to the show. Arriving into the scorching hot Sun, there was little relief as the cloud shaded the team; with Bernard Leuvennink as the captain with the 100% win-rate – “please don’t lose this toss” we thought to ourselves. However in true Bernard fashion the toss was lost, and we prepared for an agonising innings of fielding in the 31 degree sun.
With five minutes to go the final batch of players arrived; including Huss, we had trouble recognising him at first because he was wearing cricket whites, and not jeans. With all players on the pitch, we started the first innings.
Ashik and Jibran opened the bowling. It was a strong start, with Ashik’s maiden over and Jibran only giving away a four. However as we lacked an experienced wicket-keeper, the Stroke Makers made 8 boundaries by the end of the 14thover; making 78 runs in total with 21 overs left. However, all was not lost as Jibran took 3 wickets, and Ashik 1.
With the sun blazing, and the fielders tired, their best batsmen stepped into strike. Gundry’s incredible bowling took 3 wickets in 6 overs, conceding only 11 runs; and consisted of three maiden overs. Alongside him was Faisal bowling, giving 28 runs in 7 overs, and taking 0 wickets. They had made 117 runs in 6 wickets by now, the rate wasn’t bad, but it could have avoided if it wasn’t for our poor performance in fielding, consisting of many over-throws and missed opportunities. It was the final two bowlers, Huss and Yahya who took the remaining 3 wickets by the 33rdover; making the Stroke Makers all out for 209.
After we had finished bowling, it was time for tea, lo and behold our Captain Bernard had completely forgotten about both teams’ diversity; brining non-halal beef, and ham slices. After this blunder we set out batting, with Shahid and an injured Hussain opening. Shahid made one boundary and was bowled out, he was replaced by Sahir. Sahir went on to score 64 runs of 88 balls, really regaining some of the runs we had given away with the atrocious fielding.
The injured Hussain was caught out when he went for his fifth boundary, he batted extremely well for his lip injury; although if he had played in jeans, he would probably would have been unstoppable. At this point it was 93 runs, with 4 out, and we were behind the run rate. Captian Bernard stepped into bat, with an explosive start and consistency throughout – he hit 8 fours and 3 sixes.
Steve, who was batting with Bernard was run out, scoring 6 off 27 balls. Yahya replaced Steve, and got out for a duck, facing only 2 balls. Athul replaced Yahya, with the intention of parrying the balls and running singles in order to get Bernard in the strike at all times. This strategy was working well, and Athul who was playing his second game in over 12 years did the best he could to make up for the so many extras he gave, and boundaries he failed to stop whilst fielding. Bernard was eventually bowled out for 64 runs off 45 balls - frustrated at himself for the shot he was trying to play he walked off calmly.
Simon took the strike, and after a few singles back and forth, Athul was run out in an attempt to put Simon back in the strike. Jibran went in to bat next, with less than 10 overs left, the pressure was on. Simon was bowled out shortly after the start of his partnership with Jibran, and Ashik stepped in to bat. The two made highly aggressive single and double runs, featuring jumps and slides into the crease. A dispute arose as Ashik picked up the ball to hand it back to the bowler after a dead ball, with the Stroke Makers desperation levels rising they tried to call an out, but they were calmed by one of their team-mates and the game went on.
Ashik was bowled out, and Faisal stepped in. Faisal knew his role, parry the ball and run a single to get Jibran back into the strike. With the final over approaching, the fielders all moved in hungry like vultures hoping for a mis-play to a catch out Jibran. On the last ball of the 34thover, Jibran hit a single, so when the over change came he was back in the strike.
With the final over to go and 1 run needed of 6 balls, we had a lot of breathing room. However Jibran did not need this breathing room, he saw a pocket in the fielding and struck the ball right there, and deciding not to risk to see if it would make it to the boundary – they ran a single. Final score 209, won by 1 wicket.
For his efforts bowling, getting 3 wickets, and bringing the game home with his batting – Jibran was named man of the match; well earnt!
