Positivity filled the air in the opening moments of the game as we witnessed captain Plume winning the toss for the first time in 2018. Having elected to bat, things headed south relatively quickly. Some tight fast bowling and seam movement off a green wicket led to Amil being clean bowled in the early overs.
Wickets then fell at regular intervals; Chris Plume found himself caught in the infield and Ammar Akhtar, making a cameo appearance for the Exiles this week, found himself clean bowled less than two overs later. On the other end, Huss (22) seemed to be settling in with a string of boundaries, but was eventually triggered on 22 by yours truly, having been struck in front of middle stump with a delivery that kept low. At this point the Exiles had amassed a meagre 34 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.
Signs of stability were nowhere to be seen as the next few overs saw the dismissals of Johnny, Simon and Jibs for 12 runs between them. At 63-7 the game was looking like a foregone conclusion. Andrew Wingfield and Marcin Zieleniewski weren’t going down without a fight though. Some patient batting from the pair saw out the pick of the Unabombers bowlers, allowing them the freedom to attack the weaker bowlers in the latter half of the innings.
The pair put on 69 between them, with Wingfield amassing 40 and Zieleniewski 33 before both were bowled in the final overs of the innings. Faisal and Naren saw the Exiles to 147 for 9 at the end of the allotted 35 overs - a remarkable achievement given the score half way through the innings.
With a reasonable target to bowl at, Jibran and Faisal began the attack with a tidy few overs at the start of the innings. Hopes began to fade however as Jibs was comprehensively thrashed all around the field by his former boss Steve Vinnicombe, leaving Unabombers at 40 for no loss. Faisal eventually made the breakthrough with an edge taken neatly by Chris Plume behind the stumps.
Following the first set of bowling changes, Simon Gundry’s fiery pace removed the dangerous Vinnicombe’s bails. Not to be outdone and not content with having scored 40 runs, Andrew Wingfield began to make good use of the swinging ball with a triple-wicket maiden, including a hat-trick opportunity at the opening of the over. Finishing with figures of 4-24, Andrew had turned the game on its head.
The Unabombers’ tail was fast approaching and the next set of bowling changes brought on Naren, who’s usual tidy line and length produced two wickets, and Huss who picked up a wicket, clean bowled, with his loosener and wrapped up the innings with a second wicket, also clean bowled, in his next over.
Unabombers finished 109 all out from 27.1 overs, giving the Exiles a 38 run victory - an unexpected turnaround and the second time this season the Exiles have rescued victory from a very compromising position. With this kind of form, some exciting cricket days ahead this season.
