The Exiles began the 2018 season in now traditional style with a visit to SW18 for a clash with Spencer Earls. It was a swelteringly hot afternoon in south-west London, and, one would have thought, not a good day for bowling first. Spencer skipper Ian Brown, however, had to be persuaded by one of his own of the merits of batting, which he eventually did choose. Maybe the heat does funny things to skippers….

The Exiles new ball pairing of Andy Wingfield and Jibran Ahmed began well, and Wingfield dispatched the openers inside the third over, both batsmen castled via deflections off their pads. Ahmed, bowling down the slope at Openview, was generating good pace and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in his opening spell, as a couple of edges went flying behind square on the off-side but frustratingly not into the grateful hands of fielders.

The Spencer middle order was watchful in rebuilding, and used the fast outfield and western downward slope to punish any width on offer. Marcin Zieleniewski (7-1-26-0) bowled a highly effective spell, and beat the bat on several occasions without finding the breakthrough; Ashik Santimon was similarly out of luck. Generally the message seemed to be that pace on the ball was more conducive to runscoring on a reasonably slow surface.

Spencer accelerated after drinks, until Faisal Musakhel made the breakthrough, trapping the number three LBW. Spencer set their sights on reaching 200 and the numbers 4 and 5 traded lusty blows, however they were restricted in the dying moments by good death bowling from the returning Wingfield and Ahmed. Wingfield (7-0-20-3) got the prize wicket of the young number 4, just eight short of his century – in the process, the Exiles all-rounder / scorer / stats guru had overtaken club legend Naren Patel to reach 324 wickets, and become the club’s record wicket taker, which is a fantastic achievement. He led the side off after 40 overs to applause, with the Exiles set 199 to win. Tough – yes. Impossible? Not at all.

The Exiles innings got off to an unusually adrenalin-pumping start, courtesy of some clean striking from Shahid Iqbal. The highlight – indeed, the shot of the match – a huge six over long-on, plundered off the opening spin of Hussain Jafri. Having raced to 31 from just 20 balls, however, Iqbal was then undone by Jafri’s offies, bowled. Skipper Plume entered the crease and joined Keith Roberts to try and maintain momentum, however Roberts was then stumped, the first of four victims for the wily Ian Brown, and a familiar pattern developed – Exiles staying nicely in touch with the required scoring rate, but losing regular wickets going for big shots when perhaps cooler heads were required.

With  twelve overs to go, the Exiles required  60 for victory – but had only four wickets remaining when Plume, who had made a measured 42 – succumbed to tiredness and holed out to midwicket to a legspinner. Zieleniewski and Ahmed did their best to keep the momentum going, but once Marcin succumbed caught behind, the die was cast; Proceedings ended in a slightly farcical fashion as number 11 Santimon watched a loopy off break pitch, turn and clatter into his middle stump as he shouldered arms, first ball. Spencer victorious by 25 runs.

Despite some encouraging performances, the general consensus post-game was this was a game the Exiles could have won had they chased smarter – run rate was never a problem as the innings progressed at a fair clip, but wickets fell too regularly to keep that momentum going for the required time. Perhaps some lessons for next week, where the Exiles host Clapham Nomads at Abbey Rec.

Andy Wingfield was unsurprisingly named man of the match for his record-breaking display with the ball – there’ll be an interview with him to reflect his achievement coming soon.
