The Exiles were defeated by the narrowest of margins in a thriller against Spencer.

In conditions best described as ‘grey’, ‘dark’, ‘drizzly’ and ‘bloody miserable’, Exiles skipper Plume miraculously won a coin toss. Blinded by this rare moment of good fortune, he chose to play it safe and field first, aware he was armed with a range of bowling options.

As always, Spencer’s XI was blessed with a number of talented colts, two of whom made up the opening pair. They got off to a flier, timing the ball nicely and running aggressively. However on the latter, this would come to be their downfall as it precipitated a run-out thanks to an excellent piece of work in the covers by Bilal Musakhel.

Another of the Musakhel clan, Faisal, made up for a late arrival by pouching a good catch at mid-wicket off Andy Wingfield (2/30) to further check Spencer’s progress. The middle overs saw a compelling duel between Naren Patel, Phil Ling and a couple of Spencer left handers, including the dangerous Hussain Jafri.

Ling was rewarded for an excellent spell with the pick of the figures – 8-3-20-2, as Spencer had to work hard for boundaries that had, in the first 5-10 overs, come thick and fast.

Wingfield and Masie Musakhel combined well in the death overs but a final over of 19 gave the hosts a boost as they closed on 183/7.

On a pitch that didn’t have much in it for the bowlers, that felt like a decent showing in the field by the Exiles.

Openers Keith Roberts and Bilal went out to begin the chase, but the excellent opening spells from Spencer made it difficult to get going; We had scored 7 from the opening six overs.

After Bilal fell, Shahid Iqbal produced some flamboyant strokes in an entertaining 19, but when he fell, Plume joined Roberts (K) with a lot of work still to be done. Spencer’s wily duo of Sindhu and Brown came on, with pace off the ball making the Exiles pair work hard. Gradually the field spread and the partnership built, with the Exiles passing 100 and a potential grandstand finish in the offing.

The Spencer opening bowler, most likely the quickest 12 year old most of us will face, was then brought back and he knocked back Plume’s middle stump to end his innings for 32. Roberts passed another quality half century, and he worked hard with Andy Wingfield to up the run rate.

With four overs left, he was finally dismissed for 73 and Jibran Ahmed came to the wicket with the asking rate approaching 10 an over. A mixture of beautifully clean hitting and clever running meant the ask off the final over was 14.

A boundary off the third ball of the over dropped it to 7 from 3. A single and a three follow. 3 off the last ball. 12 year old Sykes bowled a full delivery onto Wingfield’s pads, and as a result the pair could only scamper through for a single leg bye.

This was a great effort against a Spencer side who mix raw talent with wise experience. It was a top game of cricket played in quality spirit – exactly everything Sunday cricket should be.
