Agricola did the double over the Exiles with a 74-run win at a muggy Chiswick.
As has happened with depressing regularity this season, a last minute drop-out meant the Exiles took the field one short. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, and the first 15 overs saw a fine contest between bat and ball; the returning Naren Patel opening up with an economical spell 0-13 from his five overs.
Andy Wingfield and Jibran Ahmed both found plenty of movement with the new ball, and Wingfield got the first breakthrough with a full swinging delivery castling the left-handed White.
Agricola’s other opener Mike Almond began to play more aggressively as the innings progressed, and took a particular liking to the first change bowling of Bernard Leuvennink, if not that of Ahmed who induced a number of false shots.
Ahmed (8-3-30-1) finally got the number three caught behind and was unlucky not to earn more, as Almond passed fifty and built a strong partnership with Will Cottee. Almond reached 82 before one heave too many at Ling took out off stump, but Cottee continued to a fifty of his own (helped by some generous Exiles fielding with three dropped catches).
Cottee was eventually run out in the closing stages, but Agricola’s typically aggressive running and powerful hitting meant they set the Exiles an imposing total of 242 to win.
The Exiles reply got off to a steady start before Keith Roberts was narrowly run out, courtesy of a direct hit from Agricola skipper Adam Norledge. Debutant opener Sid Singh and Exiles skipper Chris Plume gradually rebuilt to try and set a platform, but a string of quick wickets, with the Agricola bowlers showing savvy to take pace off the ball, meant they gave themselves a tough ask.
Wingfield joined Plume after drinks with the run rate creeping up to 9 an over, and in his efforts to move things along, Plume was caught in the deep for a patient 39, passing 1,000 Exiles runs in the process.
Wingfield and Ahmed came together for the biggest partnership of the innings, striking some clean blows and taking the Exiles past 150. Ultimately there simply weren’t enough balls left for the visitors to get close, and Wingfield’s unbeaten 52 came in vain although his 74-run partnership with Ahmed was encouraging.
Next up for the Exiles is a visit to Colets Sports Club to play Surbiton Imperials.
