Vice captain’s log:

With Captain Plume unavailable, I was tasked with leading an away team to Dulwich sports ground. Despite having 10 men we had an excellent bowling attack, if a little light on batting. Worrying about the toss and what to do, was deemed irrelevant when I found out 3 of the team had been involved in an accident in their uber shuttlecraft, and the South African contingent were having issues with their warp drive.

Although we won the toss, we had little choice but to bat, with just enough players to have opening batsmen, umpires and a scorer… Exiles started slowly as Parkinson and Wingfield both played themselves in and tried not to lose a wicket that would have exposed the middle order of Jibs, Crossland and yours truly.

Luckily the cavalry arrived and normality ensured. Exiles looked comfortable at drinks but the Ploughman spinners kept a lid on the scoring rate. Wingfield got a well deserved half century (58), and with a solid platform of 109/2 we pushed on. A flurry of wickets meant the acceleration never got going even with some lusty blows from Vulcan officer, Marcin. A total of 169 was something to defend, but always felt a little light.

Ploughmans made their characteristically aggressive start, and half chances came and went. However, Exiles started chipping at the Ploughmans line up led by an excellent spell by Jibs (2/19). Gundry was summoned and with Wingfield (3/28) at the other end Ploughmans were reduced to 81 for 6.

I was increasingly confident of a victory, but their 7th wicket proved particularly obstinate, through skill, judgement and some luck. It was to prove decisive as they managed to put together an 84 run partnership. Exiles were never out of it though and a late burst of wickets from Gundry (2/19) and Parkinson meant we went right into the last over with 4 needed or 2 wickets to take. Alas it was not to be and Ploughman skipper Lonnen saw them home with 3 balls to spare.

An excellent match in all, with a game ebbing and flowing between the teams and played in good spirits. Man of the Match for a superb all round performance Andy Wingfield.
