Last game of the season and apart from finishing the season on a high there were lots of things to be settled such as the bowling and batting trophy. Bernard was so keen to make his claim on the batting trophy he even had an early night the day before.
Will Kent, in his last game for the Exiles before heading back to Australia, lost the toss, but more importantly was scrambling around for an opener to partner Steve Parkinson. Your author did consider recreating past glories, opening at school, but sanity prevailed so I kept quiet. Andy Wingfield stepped up to the challenge for only the second time in his career.
Surbiton Imperials bowling was tight and although Parkinson was playing aggressively the scoring steady at best. Wingfield was keeping the bowling out and providing plenty of dots prompting one wag to comment “who needs Keith when we have Andy”.
With the loss of Parkinson, Bernard came in needing 26 not out for the batting trophy or 66 if dismissed. He was looking good, but was bowled by a full toss for 23. The batting trophy for 2016 was Craig William’s.
Andy began accelerating and went on to score a fine 50 playing the anchor role, like Keith, before getting out to a full toss. With plenty of wickets in hand Exiles looked set for a large score, but lost wickets regularly and ended on 170-7, when 190 or more was possible.
After a fine tea made by Andy (is there anything this man can’t do related to cricket?) Exiles were raring to go. Surbiton Imperial openers started well setting a base and attacking where possible. Just as they looked to accelerate Moynihan got the breakthrough, reward for a probing opening spell. Marcin bowled another tight 2016 spell and with “golden arm” Bernard getting another breakthrough Surbiton Imperials needed to accelerate to get the win.
Gundry was introduced to the attack, and due to his vastly superior bowling average, only needed to bowl 5 balls to claim the 2016 bowling trophy, which he did. This was the 7th time he has won the bowling trophy in an Exiles career over 12 seasons, and counting.
Ling came in to bowl with Gundry, and helped squeeze the scoring and was benefitting from the pressure to pick up 2 wickets. Wingfield came back and claimed 2 wickets in successive balls to be on a hat trick, and for his next wicket to be his 300th Exiles career wicket. Alas it was not to be, but something to look forward to next year.
Will Kent, looking forward to ending his Exiles career on a high, achieved a first in getting a stumping off Gundry whilst standing back to him as Surbiton tried their best to break the shackles. Will ended the match with a stumping off the last ball of the season as Exiles won by 29 runs.
