On a day which Englishmen dream about but rarely see the Exiles made the trip to north west London for the annual fixture at Old Merchant Taylors. And it was with a sense of foreboding that the questions started as we began to congregate under a bemused oak. How many players have we got? Can Steve bat with one gastrocnemius? Where are the beers? Is that strange yellow orb in the sky a sign of the apocalypse?
The answers came forth; 9, plus one OMT guy who wants to play for us – and it isn’t Andy. No. With Bernard, of course. It’s the sun Englishmen, rejoice.
As it turned out Old Merchant Taylors were in a worse predicament than the Exiles and could only muster nine, and most had yet to arrive. Captain Chris (plum with an “e” to his friends) did the gracious thing and offered to field, which was accepted, to get the game underway.
Andy and Ash got proceedings started and toiled on a pitch where batsmen received full value for their shots thanks to a lightning quick outfield and short boundaries all round. It wasn’t until they entered their final over that each received some reward for their effort; both collecting well deserved wickets.
With the fall of the wickets Chris turned to “I’m-not-a-bowler” Lenvennink who quickly became chief destroyer with two quick wickets whilst allowing only five measly runs off four overs. He was ably supported at the other end by Chris Plum-e who took a well-deserved wicket with his change-up delivery, or as we call it in the trade “the slip-and-almost-fall-over delivery”.
As the Exiles began to take control of the game Captain Chris unleashed his secret plan – take himself and Bernard off, never to return, to be replaced by Terrence and Hitesh. Both bowled some lovely deliveries but as the OMT batsmen looked to gather as many runs as possible neither was supported in the field with a number of opportunities being missed. This allowed OMT to finish their 35 overs with 161.
At the half way mark Chris asked for volunteers to open and was met with a deafening silence. After a bit of thought, and bowlers do need a lot of thinking time, Terrence put his hand up followed by Hitesh.
Things did not start well for the Exiles as three wickets fell quickly and it was up to Bernard and OMT-come-Exile Simon to steady the ship. And on a day of strange meteorological events so it was that Bernard, for once, was out-gunned by Simon who not only steadied the shipped but unleashed a full broadside as he raced to 57 off 34 deliveries whilst Bernard steered off his usual course to register a solid 43 off 48 deliveries.
Both Simon and Bernard departed before the run chase was complete and so it was left to Andy and Chris to bring the win home. The run-rate wasn’t an issue and both played sensible cricket to reach the total of 162 with 46 balls to spare.
