A rather young Old Ruts side took the Energy Exiles to school at the Dundonald Recreation ground on Sunday.
Exiles lost the toss and despite the best efforts of Phil Ling and Terence Moynihan, Old Ruts got off to a flying start. Ling managed to halt the momentum somewhat with some solid swing bowling; breaking the opening partnership when Patel sliced the ball to point for ten for the first of his two wickets. Ling also had Old Ruts’ number 3 out caught in the covers.
However numbers one and four proved harder to dislodge. Change bowlers Chris Plume and Steve Parkinson bowled better than their figures suggested, as did Keith Roberts, with Plume particularly unlucky to have three chances go begging in the deep. Opener Woolland rode his luck, to get to 78 before being stumped by Will Kent off Plume’s bowling.
In the end it was left to Andy Wingfield who came on after drinks, initially held back because of injury to give some credibility to the score line. He took 3 for 30 in his six overs. The first of them a good effort by Parkinson who held onto a catch in the deep despite having injured his hand earlier in the innings to bring to an end Aoeskile’s rollicking 74. By the end of the innings, Old Ruts had amassed 237 for the loss of six wickets.
After a cracking tea, Exiles took their guard, but it was soon clear it was not going to be their day. Roberts, the unlucky recipient of a birthday duck, was back in the hut in the first over, while Plume lasted only an over longer, out caught sharply at second slip for 2.
Sam Edwards played a watchful innings and, although he only made 7 before being bowled b van der Peer, proved much harder to dislodge than George Lenton and Geoff Candy who fell in quick succession for 2 and 3 respectively.
Kent (14) and Wingfield (15) consolidated somewhat to help Exiles avoid a complete rout, as did Moynihan, who was not out on 19. When it was clear that even Moynihan’s heroics were unlikely to salvage a win from the rut into which Exiles had fallen, attention turned instead to whether or not Ling would finally bring up his century for the club, and make him a member of the elite group that have taken over 100 wickets and scored more than 100 runs. He only needed three runs to get there but fell 1 run short, a mix up with Moynihan leaving them both stranded at the bowlers end.
In some respects, it rather summed up the day. The will was there, as was the experience, but the execution just didn’t quite work out as intended.
