Exiles fell short in a chase for the second week in a row as they lost to Surbiton Imperials by 42 runs on a warm day and a flat track at Colets Sports Club.
Leading run-scorer Craig had brought his Dad along for the afternoon, and implored the skipper to win the toss and bat first. Duly noted, Chris went out and, of course, lost the toss, with Surbiton skipper Jonny electing to bat first on what looked like a dry, hard surface with little in it for the bowlers.
Opening bowlers Andy and Terence started brightly, with the bulk of runs being scored in the first few overs coming in the third man region from the edge of the bat, taking advantage of a lightning fast outfield. Terence made the initial breakthrough, with an opener smartly caught at point by Shane Kruger, but thereafter Siddique and the number three began to get in the groove, and runs scoring freely on such a placid surface.
Ammar Akhtar and Jibran Ahmed came on first change and brought with them a modicum of control, with Akhtar in particular producing a taxing spell that went for just 23 runs and produced three wickets as middle order batsmen struggled to get him away. Siddique ploughed on, however, surviving a dropped catch to make his way to 50 anchoring the Surbiton innings (he was eventually dismissed, off a rank full toss from the skipper, caught and bowled). Simon Gundry's spell was quick and straight, but the occasional edge was still found as Surbiton scampered their way past 200 in the dying stages.
With the Exiles batting all the way down, and a very fast outfield, they were optimistic in their chase. However, two nagging, accurate spells from their opening bowlers tied down the Exiles innings from the start, as both opening batsmen fell cheaply. Craig Williams (38) and Andy Poole (16) steadily rebuilt, but middle order wickets began to tumble with the asking rate increasing rapidly. Simon Gundry (24) tried to build some impetus after drinks, but when he fell at 109-8, the jig looked all but up. Chris Plume (34) and Ammar (18*) produced the only 50 run partnership of the innings with some late blows, but Plume was the last to fall and Surbiton were rewarded for some tight bowling and fielding.
Ammar was a deserved man of the match for his excellent 8-0-23-3 spell and his unbeaten knock at the end.
Next up for Exiles is Old Ruts at Dundonald Rec.
