Exiles slipped to a dramatic last ball defeat against Merton at the John Innes Rec.
With nearby floods on Kingston Road, Exiles did well to get 10 players at the ground for moreorless the designated start time, although the toss was lost and Exiles were batting.
After the early loss of last weeks centurion Leuvennink, Roberts (26) and Williams (49) compiled a stand of 74 - assisted by a significant extras contribution it's got to be said, to take Exiles to 89 for 1 just after half-way.
However once Williams was trapped in front for a jug-avoiding 49, the hoped-for Exiles acceleration didn't really materialise, despite a brisk 33 from debutant Sam Edwards.
A heroic 2 not out from Phil Ling - taking him to an agonising 97 career runs - saw the Exiles innings close all out off the last ball for 173.
This felt a touch short, but with the way the Exiles (particularly Williams) tucked into the excellent tea, the team didn't seem too concerned.
But Merton had a stronger batting line up than the last game with the top 4 all making at least 24, to put the home side in a strong position.
The Exiles kept chipping away however - all 6 bowlers used picking up one wicket - and with the returning openers of Wingfield and Akhtar keeping things relatively tight, 6 were needed off the last over. And then 3 off 2, before a scrambled leg bye off the last delivery saw the Exiles beaten.
A fine, entertaining game. Exiles competed hard, but in truth probably weren't quite at their best, and were also hampered at seemingly key moments by only having 10 players.
Merton were delighted and Exiles had to take this one on the chin. Narrow defeats are often harder to take.
