After a week of heavy rain, the weekend sunshine was welcomed by all players, sadly it left a pitch looking a little soft, and although there was a short boundary, a perfect one to bowl first on. Which Exiles did after Skipper Plume won the toss and led his team of 10 onto the field.

Any hope of making the most out of the pitch was shattered by some aggressive batting from Ploughmans openers, reaching 50 runs in 6 overs. Needing a change on came the Polish Destroyer Marcin who was immediately looking dangerous, getting lift from a nagging length. He got the breakthrough and with Simon really throttled them back, so the overall rate was around 4 an over.

It turned out Mrs Zieleniewski (Anya) and daughter (Amelia) were watching on the sidelines during Marcin’s excellent spell. Luckily there were no loved ones watching Messrs Moynihan and Ling, as the middle order got stuck into the bowling making use of space created by a 10 player team. A flurry of late wickets for Gundry, capped off another fine spell and limited the damage. Although it would require one of our best chases ever.

Over a fine tea it dawned on the team that we had a team full of bowlers and all rounders, even if the score didn’t reflect that, but a lack of top order batsmen. Bernard volunteered to open, the author’s eyebrows were raised, not due to ability, but because he can be so dangerous further down the order.

Exiles started very well with sharp running between Chris and Bernard, and pressure being applied on the opposition bowlers. Ploughman’s skipper was happy for Exiles to keep the scoreboard ticking over, milking the bowling for c.5 an over. The 100 partnership came before Chris departed for 41, his best score for a while, with a solid platform for Exiles.

Terence didn’t have a chance to make an impression, but Jonny took his time to play himself in after having precious little cricket recently. Slowly the pace cranked up, although the runs were more from balls being bludgeoned to the boundary as Bernard was getting pretty tired. Bernard got past the nervous 90s, as though he had anti-freeze in his veins, to score his first ever century. The job was not done though, but with his century behind him Bernard went on the rampage smashing length balls for 6, and at one stage scattering his team mates on the sidelines with one 6. Why we didn’t attempt to catch it I don’t know.

Bernard and Jonny ended up seeing us home, both with their highest scores for the Exiles, and a fine victory.
