A thrilling game at Dundonald Road yesterday as 10-man exiles scrambled a tie against Agricola - again.
Sunny, dry conditions at Dundonald Road precipitated skipper Chris Plume to win the toss at 1.50 with the entire Agricola team, but only 2 Exiles players, in attendance. He had little choice but to elect to bat, but he was soon regretting his decision as he was the first batsman to fall, beaten all ends up by a beauty from opener Kitchin that jagged sharply in to clip the top of off stump.
Thereafter, it has to be said that the Exiles did not cover themselves in glory; all 8 of the remaining wickets to fall were to catches, as a succession of batsmen were caught, on a slow surface, going aerial and failing to clear the infield. The top contributors were Steve Parkinson, solid at the top (36 from 49) and Terence Moynihan (25 from 38) but no-one stayed around very long, and the home side were all out 3 shy of 35 overs for what looked a distinctly below par 140.
After an excellent tea from Ammar and Steve, the Exiles took to the field looking to redeem themselves and opening bowlers Wingfield and Akhtar began with purpose, with their opening spells not conceding much above 3 an over. But Almond and Hennessey were looking solid, knowing they did not need to go mad to reach the target. Enter Justin Lamprecht, who arrived at Dundonald as a spectator following a morning of golf, and ended up as a late recruit for the Exiles. Lamprecht was introduced to bowl his off-breaks, and in his second over he got the breakthrough with the score on 47, one of two catches for Ashik Santimon. His change partner, Marcin Zielenewski, kept the pressure on at the other end with a parsimonious spell of 7-1-20-1, and suddenly just after drinks the Exiles had a sniff, although the required run rate was still within reach.
With 11 overs remaining and 6 wickets required for victory, Plume turned to Ashik and Terence, hoping their extra pace would reap rewards; and so it proved, with Ashik cleaned bowled the left handed White first ball of his spell, and went on to take another two wickets in a similar fashion. The dangerous, nuggety skipper Adam Norledge entered, and made what looked a potentially decisive contribution, running sharply and with some clean hits before he was Santimon's third victim. Wingfield came back on for the penultimate over and bowled a double wicket maiden, and suddenly Agricola required 10 to win from the final over. The last pair scampered a couple of ones and twos, and then remarkaby a 3 from the last ball, taking advantage of Dundonald's deep boundaries, to reach a tie.
Mixed emotions then at the close, as we got so close to pulling off what would have frankly been a bit of a heist following a below-par batting performance. Credit to our bowlers for getting us so close and by bowling terrifically - full and straight.
MOTM: Ashik for his spell of 6-1-25-3
