We continued our run of good luck with the weather (if not much else) at Spencer for our first official fixture of the season.

Skipper Chris started his 2016 tossing in better touch than last season, and opted to take the new ball and invited the home side to bat. With a slightly 'weary' and injured Andy Wingfield turning up on the stroke of 2, messrs Akhtar and Santimon provided the opening salvo and they made early inroads - Akhtar inviting an expansive drive from one left handed opener to a ball that swung sharply in, and then securing a plumb LBW a few overs later; Santimon prizing the other opener from the crease with one that jagged back off the pitch to castle off stump. Akhtar finished with figures of 8-2-28-2, and would be the pick of the Exiles bowlers.

Thereafter, life was much harder for the Exiles, as a combination of meaty hitting and.....let's call it 'generous' fielding, contributed to Spencer really accelerating after drinks. A maiden wicket for Shane Kruger was the only punctuation, as the big hitting left-handed Jafri and first XI opener Ali combined to push Spencer beyond 200, despite the best efforts of Wingfield and Moynihan.

Jafri brought up his hundred in the dying moments, having been dropped around 7 times (including a sitter from the skipper behind the stumps) and the general feeling at tea was that, while 221 was a chaseable total, we had helped Spencer get a bit more than they should have.

The Exiles chase started in a reasonably good order with a solid partnership between Drew Scott-Dawkins and Steve Parkinson. But the Spencer opening bowlers gave little away, and induced both openers into shots for catches. Searle and Plume looked to consolidate, but after Searle was dismissed just before drinks things looked an uphill struggle at 69/4.

There was a rally after drinks, with Wingfield (28) and Moynihan (34) playing some shots, including a couple of huge sixes, but the run rate kept climbing and Plume (42*), although going better after a slow start, was not able to hit the required boundaries often enough.
