Sunday saw our first sighting of Ham & Petersham, in a fixture that was arranged at the last minute thanks to Naren’s good work. Both sides had 10 players, the pitch looked hard and brown, and conditions looked ideal for batting. Sadly we lost the toss, again, so were asked to bowl under clear blue skies.
Ham & Petersham started aggressively, almost like they were showing us how England should play One Day cricket. However, Bernard “Botham”’s golden arm worked it’s magic, and we had 2 quick wickets, one from a ball which spat from a length and took the glove for an easy catch in the gully.
Their new batsmen continued in an aggressive manner, although Exiles created chances, and there were two dropped catches. Ham’s #4 batsman was ruthlessly punishing anything remotely short and the ball was finding its way towards all parts of nearby landmarks. Bernard was having fun keeping fit out at deep point / square leg, even talking a stroll to a nearby garden to fetch the ball. Exiles were lacking a fifth bowler and this was telling on a hot afternoon.
Eventually the 3rd wicket was taken, but the shots kept going. Bowlers got rotated. Fielding got scratchier. The #4 bat managing his maiden 100 – we later discovered he was in fact a hockey-playing German hockey player, who’d only taken up cricket last year… Ham & Petersham ended on 254-7 with Bernard taking 4 for 54.
After another excellent home tea from Chris and Drew, yours truly was clearing up and sorting out drinks when the Exiles started our innings. It was therefore a little strange to come back out to find 2 of our batsmen had already been dismissed. It got worse as our third wicket went for one run. We were 1-3.
Craig and Will attempted to steady the ship, shots were played, but we kept losing wickets. There was full value for money from the shots played. An injured Drew Scott-Dawkins, batted with a runner, after injuring himself the day before acquiring 50+ runs for OMT. However, he kept forgetting he had a runner, and would sprint from the crease only to pull up in agony after 3 steps and swear loudly each time.
At 136 for 8, Ling strolled out to bat facing left arm spin of the Deadly Derek Underwood variety. Expectations were low, but somehow, and relishing the chance the kick the ball away when the ball pitched outside leg, he saw the over out. Bernard then launched a counterattack, smashing his way past 50, like Viv Richards, whilst “Michael Holding” Ling (in bowling as well as batting!) kicked and left at the other end. Bernard was racing towards 100, there was even talk of winning the game in the middle, when Ling padded up to a ball pitching on middle and leg and hitting off from the left arm spinner and left Bernard stranded on 89 not out from just 53 balls. Exiles lost the game by 70 runs, in one of our more disappointing games of the season so far.
