Rusty Exiles swept aside by Spencer

A ruthless performance by Spencer CC ensured a comfortable 9-wicket win over the Exiles in their first fixture of the 2015 season.

The match had been in doubt in the days leading up to the fixture as the weather forecast seemed unfavourable. However, come Sunday lunchtime the rain had cleared, and generally sunny conditions greeted the Exiles as they arrived in Earlsfield.

Spencer skipper Ian Brown won the toss and elected to field, in bowler friendly conditions - a decision vindicated by the early wickets achieved, of Plume, Searle and Clephane. A mini recovery was staged for the sixth wicket as the returning Marc Simpson and Andy Wingfield produced an encouraging 50 partnership; Simpson hitting straight in particular with relish. However, he was caught attempting another expansive hit just before the drinks break, and it was left to all-rounder Simon Rowland, with good support from Andy Wingfield (22) and Ammar Akhtar (14), to see Exiles through to the closing stages. Rowland showed commendable patience and application on a surface where the ball rarely came on. Having seen the Exiles over 150, a flurry of late wickets, with Rowland the last for 47, meant barring a strong showing in the field from their opponents, Spencer faced an undemanding chase.

Spencer started aggressively, with two left handed opening batsmen quite happy to open their shoulders and play their shots. Wingfield (5-0-22-0) produced a probing opening spell, but by now the ball was old and of little assistance to the Exiles seamers - Akhtar produced the solitary wicket, Will Clephane holding on to a catch in the gully; But it proved little relief as despite an excellent spell from the multi-talented Rowland (8-1-31-0) Spencer continued to find the boundaries and reached the target with more than 12 overs to spare.

A disappointing start to the season for the Exiles, who really need their strongest XI to fire in order to properly challenge Spencer at Fieldview. Credit should go to the opposition, however, for a disciplined and miserly effort in the field backed up by some crisp hitting.

Next week's fixture at Merton affords the Exiles an opportunity to get off the mark for the season.
