Energy Exiles travelled to Kenley for a game against Southern Railway & Kenley (SR&K). Our team included two debutants (Mohammad Islam and Ryan Fremantle), two players in only their second games for the club (George Poole and Chris Kee), and champion allrounder, Jeff Hilson, returning after a six year absence from the side.
We lost the toss and SR&K chose to bat first in warm conditions on a slow wicket. Andy Wingfield (fresh from taking 7 for 18 the previous day) and Jeff Hilson both bowled steadily without reward as the openers batted well. Naren Patel, was clearly suffering with a sore shoulder, but bowled tidily at reduced pace and had a difficult chance put down off his bowling. At the other end, Mohammad Islam bowled his leg-spin without any luck at all, with several shots just dropping to safety. It took the introduction of Ryan Fremantle to make the breakthrough with his slingy left-armers as Barry Whiteman took a good catch at mid-wicket to dismiss the opener for a well-made 50. The other opener went up the gears, but Ryan bowled the No.3. The opener eventually made 100 as SR&K accelerated their scoring, but lost wickets are regular intervals. George Poole recovered very well from some strong hitting early in his spell to take 2 for 37, and the returning Jeff Hilson took a wicket as SR&K finished on 244 from their 40 overs.
SR&K put on a splendid tea, and it seemed to inspire Barry Whiteman who made a very quick start opening the batting. Mark Bradshaw could not find any fluency, but we reached 45 off 11 overs before Bradshaw was bowled for 13. Barry followed soon after for 37 and we collapsed to 66 for 5. Andy Wingfield and Mohammad Islam then brought about a splendid recovery with both hitting sixes in a very positive batting display. Andy was bowled by a fine off-cutter for 27 and Jeff Hilson batted very sensibly in a supporting role. Jeff did hit the “shot of the day” as he hooked a short ball through square leg, but sadly fell lbw shortly afterwards. The innings quickly folded with Mohammad Islam last man out for an excellent 69 from 71 balls on debut, as we closed on 156 all out.
Exiles lost this match by 88 runs, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable game against good opposition on a fine ground and I hope we play them again. There were also many positives from this game – Barry and Andy’s batting; the contributions of teenagers, Ryan and George; Jeff’s successful comeback; and Mohammad’s excellent all-round performance for which he wins Man of the Match.
