Energy Exiles entertaining Innings for the first time on a mild, if a little windy, day at Overton Park for a game that turned out to be a low scoring classic.
Innings represented an unknown quantity to the Exiles and shockwaves went through the Exiles when Wil Scott was bowled for 2 in the first over. There then followed a good stand of 68 in 16 overs between Keith Roberts (36) and Mark Bradshaw (28) with both playing some good shots through the off-side. Innings began to look a little ragged in the field before Bradshaw was dismissed by a fine in-swinger for 28. The Exiles innings then completely collapsed as eight wickets fell for only 17 runs mainly to some steady, medium paced, length bowling from Ivan Ayup (Jonty - are you sure this was his name? MB). This showed how the threat of another Thamesfield -type collapse remains. Kristian Armstrong with an inspirational 27 (almost exclusively through the use of the sweep) and Gwyn Thomas (1 not out) came to the rescue in a last wicket stand of 25 as the Exiles closed on 112 all out. This was at least 40 runs short of the target the Exiles should have been aiming at given they were 70 for 1 at one stage.
The Exiles made a good start, taking two early wickets through two good catches by Keith Roberts. There then followed a potentially terrible accident as Robin Airey was struck on the head at gully by a fierce sliced drive. Luckily no bones were broken as Robin bravely returned to the field later in the innings. Nick Creak (5 for 40) and Jonty Tarbuck (3 for 34) continued to whittle through a strong Innings batting line-up which was obviously used to a rather faster wicket. Innings subsided to 50 for 6 before their number 7 batsman (who was batting about three places too low in the order) came to their resuce with a priceless 37 runs. Chris Bunton bowled well without much luck for 1 for 19 as the lower order crept towards their target. Captain Wil Scott recalled Creak and Tarbuck to the attack, but they could not dismiss the final pair as Innings completed a one wicket win.
Another frustrating result for the Exiles who were unlucky to lose. The Exiles can take pride from a good bowling and fielding performance. However, the batting still requires improvement. The Exiles mediocre batting performances this season are difficult to understand given that the batting line up from last season has been strengthened by the arrival of one or two new players. Exiles' man of the match was Nick Creak for a career best bowling performance of 5 for 40.
