Robin Airey and Mark Bradshaw opened the batting for the Exiles in this match at Chiswick. Both played solidly against the Wealdstone opening bowlers, putting on 44 before the introduction of a leg-spinner led to the dismissal of both; Airey stumped for 20 and Bradhsaw bowled round his legs for 14. John Priestland (32) and Amil Patel (12) batted very well against the spinners, before the Exiles lost three quick wickets. Chris Bunton and Dicken Goodwin both defended well (with Chris particularly demonstrating his own way of playing fast bowling by ensuring that he remained at the non-strikers end) before Alex Wass entered to make an excellent 29 not out on debut which pushed the Exiles score to 150 all out.
Alex Wass was unable to find his line and length early on, but was rewarded with a wicket for his persistence. Gwyn Thomas, on the other hand, had no luck in an excellent bowling spell in which he saw two catches dropped. Chris Bunton took an early wicket, but the Wealdstone batsmen took a heavy toll on his bowling as they made advantage of a short boundary. Naren Patel introduced himself to the attack and bowled a very tidy spell in which he was rewarded with a wicket. Naren seemed to have regained the "nip" which took him to the bowling award in 1996. However, the Exiles lacked a real cutting edge and Wealdstone, despite losing two late wickets to Amil Patel and Steve Hodgson, easily passed the Exiles total for the loss of five wickets.
A reasonable performance by an under-strength Exiles. I am sure that with the inclusion of one of Jeff Hilson, Jonty Tarbuck or Nick Creak in the attack the Exiles would have beaten Wealdstone. Man of the match for the Exiles was John Priestland for a good 32 and two catches behind the wicket.
