Energy Exiles began their first ever tour with a forty over match against Knoll Pharmaceuticals on Friday 8 August 1997. Wil Scott and Mark Bradshaw opened the batting in temperatures approaching 90 degrees. The Exiles suffered an early shock with the first ball dismissal of Bradshaw as he mis-timed a ball to mid-off. Wil Scott and Nick Creak quickly followed Bradshaw to the pavillion to leave the Exiles in deep trouble at 20 for 3. John Priestland and an uncharacteristically defensive Sam Scott then put together a reasonable stand before Sam was bowled for 11. Jeff Hilson then supported Priestland with 13 runs before he too was dismissed. By this time, Priestland was in full cry, flaying the bowling to all parts as he quickly moved past his 50. The entry of Kristian Armstrong increased the scoring rate and he and Priestland added over 70 runs before the Exiles' innings closed on 182 for 5 from 40 overs. Armstrong finished on 33 not out and  Priestland was just short of his maiden century on 98 not out. This must have been a particularly satisfying innings for John Priestland as it was made in front of his parents and because he had organised the tour. Furthermore, it carried John to the top of the Exiles' batting averages for the season (for 24 hours at least).

The Knoll Pharmaceuticals' opening batsmen seemed clueless against the pace of Jeff Hilson and guile of Nick Creak and were quickly back in the pavillion. The number three did demonstrate the necessary courage and technique to counter the Exiles' bowling and with the support of Mike Skill began to quickly threaten the Exiles total. However, an excellent spell of 4 for 23 from Sam Scott ran through the batting as the innings closed on 133 all out. There were wickets too for Chris Bunton and Luke Butler. The Exiles maintained their discipline in the field on a very hot and humid day and no catches were put to ground.

Man of the match was John Priestland for his highest score. Thanks should also be conveyed to John's parents for providing an excellent tea and covering the scoring duties. Following the game, the Exiles retired to the delightful Crusader pub. Jeff Hilson particularly enjoyed the Crusader and was most disappointed that we did not visit the picturesque Man of Trent public house during our stay in Clifton. This was then followed by a trip to a country pub in Radcliffe on Trent, the night ending with some entertainment on the Exiles mini-bus and a vodka-assisted lecture from Mark Bradshaw on the subject of kebabs and cricket.
