In the absence of both Wil Scott and Naren Patel, Chris Bunton captained the Energy Exiles for the first time. Bunton lost the toss and Buckingham elected to bat on a hard but green wicket.
Jonty Tarbuck opened the attack with a spell of decidedly sharp bowling and was rewarded with an early wicket as John Priestland completed an excellent diving one-handed catch to dismiss one of the Buckingham openers. However, Gwyn Thomas struggled with his length as the other Buckingham batsmen started attacking ominously.
Bunton introduced himself to the attack in the 20th over and captured two quick wickets. Chris continued to take wickets at regular intervals to finish with 5 for 26. Sam Scott and David Coles provided excellent support. However, the Buckingham tail wagged to complete a total of 146 all out. The late introduction of Keith Roberts and the return of Jonty Tarbuck finally brought the Buckingham innings to a close.
Keith Roberts and Mark Bradshaw opened for the Exiles. Roberts was dismissed in the second over to an uncharacteristic poor pull shot. Worse was to follow as Robin Airey was out for a duck, caught at slip off a ball that reared a little to leave the Exiles in trouble at 4 for 2. Priestland defended stoutly as Bradshaw began attacking the Buckingham bowling. However, Priestland unluckily played on for 4 and Bradshaw soon followed for a breezy 29 as the Exiles were back in trouble at 43 for 4. Dicken Goodwin (21) showed a good eye and Sam Scott (22) played some fine strokes in a stand of 40 before both were dismissed in quick succession. The dismissal of Kristian Armstrong for 10 runs effectively ended the Exiles' hopes of overhauling Buckingham's total. The tailenders were unable to hold on for the draw as the Exiles innings closed on 101 all out.
This was a disappointed result for Chris Bunton in his first game in charge. However, it was always going to be an uphill struggle following the quick dismissals of Keith Roberts and Robin Airey. Man of the match for leading by example with his bowling was Chris Bunton (but unfortunately not with his batting! - Sorry Chris - MB).
