On another overcast and windy afternoon, the Exiles played a new fixture against Imperial who were expected to provide tough opposition. Once again, the Exiles lost the toss and were asked to field first for what was Dan Killaly’s final game of the season prior to a temporary return to Australia.
Imperial proved to have a very strong opening partnership leaving the Exiles struggling to contain the scoring initially. Andy bowled a decent spell but the batsmen were punishing on any loose bowling scoring at a healthy rate. The wind clearly made bowling very difficult and both Martin and Patel Snr punished at various points in their spells. The Exiles fielding also seemed to be negatively impacted by the weather as various players managed to drop catches and display variable levels of coordination in the field. Both the Imperials opening batsmen passed 50 fairly easily and without too many dramas.
Exiles began to claw their way back into the game before the 20 over drinks break as the slower bowling and variations of Killaly, JPJ and Ling first slowed the run rate and then led to a steady stream of wickets. Killaly, in particular, caused the batsmen difficulties with his left arm variations. JPJ and Killaly both took 2 wickets with Wil managing a good slow-mo stumping. Imperials ended up on 236-7 when at one time it looked like they could end up with nearer 260-270. The total was challenging but gettable, especially given the early season form shown by Killaly.
Exiles started off a reasonable run rate against some decent quick bowling. Sharaz played some good attacking shots while Jasper a good solid innings to start with. However, the quick bowler managed to hit Jasper on the elbow and he forced to retire hurt. This brought in Tither who took on the fast bowler in reverse Hilson style and hit him out of the attack. Once Sharaz was out for a well compiled 26, Killaly came to the wicket and played a top class innings. He played some brutal shots and took apart the bowling, scoring 88 from 57 balls with 16 boundaries. Killaly was well supported by Tither and Jasper who scored 42 and 41 respectively. The remaining runs were knocked off by Killaly and Amil with the Exiles reaching the target of 237 with 8 overs to spare.
A special mention should go to Dan Killaly who was man of the match again. He has added another dimension to the Exiles in the early part of the summer with his bowling variations and explosive batting. We hope to see him back next season...
