Not a good day for the Exiles as they were thrashed by a strong Merton side.

Exiles put Merton into bat. Bad move. Merton responded more than eagerly despite Simon Gundry's early caught & bowled. Ranga Fernando (103ret) and Chris Argyle (86) tore into all bowlers with glee on a pitch that played much better than it looked. At least until the Exiles batted. There was usually at least one four-ball an over from all Exiles bowlers, and sometimes event decent-looking deliveries were despatched.

The only thing the Exiles did right in the field was actually allow Fernando to reach his century with a full 10 overs to go – as his subsequent retirement saw the run-rate considerably decline over the last few overs – when at one stage a 300+ score looked likely. Argyle's wicket was eventually snapped up by Phil Ling courtesy of a smart catch by Sri at short extra-cover and a couple of full deliveries – one that was more than full - from Andy Wingfield – grabbed the Exiles a couple of late consolation wickets.

Exiles retired for tea (one of the best on the Exiles circuit) dazed and confused. And the batting performance that followed continued the theme as most Exiles looked like their fielding exertions had knocked the stuffing out of them. Only Sri (18), Keith (15) and Simon (9no) could take any credit from their efforts – nobody else got past 3, and 4 players got ducks. The bowling wasn't bad – and certainly extracted a touch of life more than the Exiles attack had mustered, but the Exiles are way better than this – despite the absence of several key players (again) and will need to re-group fast.
