The team turned up at Haydons Road for another match on a delightful municipal pitch. The pitches available looked a little green so when Exiles skipper JPJ chose the greenest pitch and to bat first there was much surprise. The pitch actually played ok, a little variable in bounce but it was more the Commonwealth opening bowlers were very good.
Jasper batted well and fluently but regular fall of wickets meant we lost 4 wickets for only 43 runs. A mini recovery firstly between Jasper and Simon, then Simon and Andy, playing patiently, got us to 106, with a long tail. Luckily at this stage both the tail wagged and Simon displayed his full range of shots. Ling and Simon put on 29, with Ling being very lucky to survive so long (even more so to end up 3rd top scorer with 7!); and an unbeaten stand of 20 between Naren and Simon, mainly due to Simon's lusty 6s at the end of the innings. Simon ended up 69 not out.
A total of 155 looked slightly short of par, but was a good total considering the position the team was in.
Commonwealth looked like a team of talented batsmen but very tight and aggressive bowling by Andy, Simon and Naren kept the pressure on. Simon got the first breakthrough and Commonwealth lost regular wickets. Their eyes lit up when Gwyn came on to bowl, losing 4 wickets to him, as they played some rather loose shots. Despite the steady lose of wickets, Commonwealth were well in the hunt for a wicket with their aggressive batting, especially with some loose bowling by Ling and new player Astridge. However, on this occasion, their tail could not wag for long enough and Commonwealth were all out for 121 in 25 overs to give Exiles a 34 run victory.
Commonwealth being a laid back and jovial team celebrated the match with us by sharing a lovely bottle of rum. We will be playing them again...
