Right....a Twenty20 game against a team called SuperStars. Now, my 3 year old daughter understands both words "Super" and "Stars", and by her definition, I was looking forward to playing such a group of "shiny" "wow makers"...but the only stars on show that day were Exiles stars...
It was a truly professional display by all Exiles present, with notable performances from: Sharaz, with his explosive hitting at the start of the innings; ably assisted by John Tither's professional batting style; a few lusty blows from the guesting Saffer, Justin (who also managed to wear a particularly impressive bruise following a determined strike straight back down the ground from Mike Phillips that hit him flush in the chest!); a fine all round bowling performance (apart from yours truly!); and a pretty good fielding effort, especially Martin's direct hit run out (although a few of the catching efforts were comedy gold...!).
Scoring over 200 in a Twenty20 fixture is always going to be a hard act to follow, but as the main idea behind this form of the game is to allow the batsman to have free licence and entertain the onlookers, this all seemed par for the course... However, the SuperStars batting approach was a more solid one as, apart from a few open shoulder moments, the strength of the Exiles bowling was far too much for the their batsmen and as such there simply wasn't a great deal of intent, and it became a comprehensive Exiles win.
We were fortunate to field a side for this match that we would be confident of winning most encounters. From the second or third over, there was only one team in it, as the exiles batting was at its explosive best. In fact, it seemed we had enough runs well before the end of our allotted overs.
After a 2 ball duck (triggered) on Sunday, Man of the Match is awarded to Sharaz for his (Gilchrist esq) 50 from 25 balls. He is a real find for the club, and his attacking approach to batting is something worth considering as another opening option for the longer form of the game that we play. Watch out Q, your cavalier 'stand and deliverĀ' approach could have some serious competition...!
With the weather at its best, the sun shining and the beer flowing (eventually), this Twenty20 thrash about made for a very enjoyable summer evening's entertainment...
