As is there inimitable style Wealdstone Corinthians X got off to a rapid start averaging nearly ten an over for the first eight overs and reaching 81-3 after ten overs and 112-4 off fifteen overs. The expansive batting of their first five batsman would have been even more productive but for the perseverance and guile of first Andy Wingfield (3 for 55) in his first game as player rather than player and captain, and then Adam Uttley (4 for 29) looked to have restricted WC to around 125. However at 125-9 with twenty overs still to go the final pair reverted to a variation of French cricket and kept all bowlers out whilst they collected another 40 runs off the next 15 overs ending on 165 all out. Wil continued the start of a developing career as a fielder with two neat catches on his way to being the leading catcher by the end of July.
With comfortably the best bowling attack faced during the season Exiles X batsmen mostly got started but could not build the long innings that was required to make a telling contest. Q (20), Jasper (11) and JPJ (9) all went after seemingly being well set. It was left to Andy Wingfield continuing his heroics, this time with the bat, who plundered the bowling with an accomplished 32 and whilst he was at the wicket with valuable lengthy support from Wil (8 off 32 balls) and Martin Kerrison (12 off 35) looked as if he might lead the Exiles to a close victory. However with a little wag from the tail and some lusty blows from Martin Thomas and Naren the innings came to an abrupt end some 40 runs short, a telling figure given the runs put on by the last WC pair.
This game marked the return of Amil to the side after a world tour with special attention to Latin America, and a return that saw him take up the reins of the captaincy after a hugely successful period under the drive of the all-rounder Andy Wingfield. Amil who took to the field having been back in the country for only 6 days after his nine months of travelling, found the going tough. With a wobbly time behind the stumps and no runs off the bat, Amil will know that things can only get better... as later reports showed. Amil should take some comfort from an improving loosing record against WC and more players turning out. Previous scores of 37 from 8 players and 110 from 10 players from the 2008 season and loosing margins of 59 and 53 respectively means that performance is going in the right direction. Amil will also take heart from the chinese proverb that one of the players was overheard to utter in the bar: 塞 翁 失 马. Or to put it another way: Certain bad luck is actually "a blessing in disguise."
The man of the match went to Andy Wingfield for his all round performance of 3 for 55 and top score of 32.
