It may have been good for the goose, but one gander at the Chiswick outfield on Sunday revealed a goose awful mess that would have had lesser men than Jeff Hilson running for cover. With only one match at the CSSC the geese were out in force.
Despite morning rain, the weather cleared up nicely. The wicket was green but surprisingly hard and true. The long grass and other objects made the outfield slow. Following several comprehensive wins, the Exiles were looking to continue their good form, even without batting legend, Martin Thomas.
British Library batted first and the damp conditions was producing talk of "dibbly dobblers". Andy and Naren both started in their usual accurate form and both getting some lift off the pitch. Despite a nasty bouncer from Naren, their opener tucked into anything that wasn't vaguely perfect line and length and played some brutal shots. Andy cleaned up the other opener fairy swiftly but the other continued to put on runs very quickly and we were soon going for six an over.
Simon came on first change and bowled a few looseners before cranking up to a fearsome pace. Obviously feeling the benefits of high altitude training the previous week, Simon charged in like a man running from a highly dangerous and intimidating imaginary horse. A full length, fast ball bowled the dangerous opener who was swiftly followed by another two bowled in his first spell.
The runs continued, despite the wickets and the opposition were close to 100 at the twenty over stage. One of their middle order batsman continued to score quickly. Phil Ling produced his usual tidy spell, bowling eight overs straight through as they were looking to push on. Jon P-J also came on and bowled tidily towards the end of the innings. We needed wickets to peg them back.
Naren produced some great fielding to run out one of their batsman. Wil swooped and produced a direct hit and we had some good fortune where their top scorer was dismissed backing up as Andy flicked the ball onto the stumps. Andy and Simon both picked up wickets in their second spells and Naren picked up another courtesy of a great catch at slip by Jon.
British Library finished on 175, a fairly challenging score with the slow outfield. With just one game on, there was talk of the "holy trinity of tea", Samosas, Sausage rolls and crisps. Alas, this was idle talk. Amil and Quentin opened and got off to a good start, putting on 31 at four an over. Following a quick single, Amil called for another. A direct hit left Quentin stranded by several yards, but he's not bitter.
Jon was dismissed shortly afterwards, a rare occurrence, and was followed by new recruit Jayesh, signed from the IPL/Thames Water who played well for 12. Amil continued in good form and was going aerial to keep the runs up with the run rate. Mike Phillips smashed 25 at more than a run a ball which put us ahead of the run rate but we continued to lose wickets. Will put on 30 with Amil but after his dismissal, Amil soon departed. An excellent and well paced innings of 67 finally succumbing to the mysteries of the "doosra".
Up with the rate, but with only three wickets remaining, another 38 was still needed with the "Uzi's" of Simon and Andy at the crease. The game could have swung wither way at this stage. Both played very sensibly, taking few chances as we edged our way towards the total. Mixed with a few big hits we got there reasonably comfortably without the loss of any further wickets with an over and a bit to spare.
