After a heavy night's rain Chiswick A's pitch was probably the greenest ever seen in August, so the pressure was on Amil to win the toss. This he did and he even managed to make the right decision and elected to field.
From the outset the Exiles bowlers bowled a lovely length making as much use of the green pitch as possible (which played reasonably well despite being a bit slow). The first wicket fell to Phil Chamberlain (curiously called Jemberlay in the Cypos score book which most Exiles agreed was a far better name), once again bowling a batsman with his hypnotically slow slower ball. I struggle to remember Phil C taking a wicket with anything but his slow ball.
Early good work from Phil C and Naren was continued by those that followed, all aided by the bulky presence of Wil at short mid-on and short mid-off, which their talented left-hander admitted after the match was a bit unnerving. In fact it was an excellent fielding performance by everyone, the bowlers backed up brilliantly throughout the Cypos innings. Both Phil Ling and Martin bowled excellently, hardly ever allowing the Cypos batsman freedom outside their off-stump. Martin bowled the best I've seen this season, ideal preparation for the much anticipated tour of North Yorkshire. The only one of Cypos's top order batsman to cope was the left-hander Hubbard. He stroked a classy 53, which a mixture of watchfulness and shear brutality. He finally succumbed by over-enthusiastically launching Naren's slower ball into orbit only to find himself treading on his own wicket in the process. Only Simon suffered at the hands of some lovely lower order straight hits from Metcalfe and Cypos closed their innings at 145 for 7, well below par for a team that regularly passes 200. Special mention must also go to Amil. Since returning behind the stumps he has kept very well, taking his catches and only giving away 1 bye in the last three games.
At tea the gloom started to close in. The heavens opened and it was commonly thought that that was that. However Cypos's skipper was enthusiastic and convinced that good weather was on its way (despite evidence otherwise) and was probably looking forward to bowling on a wet wicket. Sounds a bit like another skipper we all know and love. The rain eased and Quentin and Keith took the field. Nine overs passed without any mishap. The Cypos bowlers failed cause them any trouble and the Exiles looked set to win their sixth game in a row, but the rain clouds always threatened and when the heavens opened again it was clear that conditions were very poor and could be dangerous. Keith took the correct decision and walked off.
Phil Jemberlay is man of the match for his excellent 3 for 15.
