With regular skipper Andy in Stockholm attempting his first Marathon, the burden of leading the Exiles fell on Amil for the tough Strollers fixtures. Exiles came into the match with an unfamiliar line up including four debutantes following a last minute scramble for players. Amil won the toss and elected to bat on an overcast day and slightly damp wicket.
Debutante Michael Awosika opened the batting with Q against some good bowling from French and Robinson. Both openers played some "sensible cricket" in testing conditions before Michael perished to French. Q was uncharacteristically subdued despite trying the odd "swing himself off his feet shot" and was eventually out for 9. Enter Wil…
…to "drop anchor" and hold the innings together while watching other batsmen come and go. Amil was caught behind off a super slow-mo Lees delivery. There were brief cameos from debutantes Glover and Owen - one hitting exclusively on the offside and the other on the leg side. The consistent queries of "how many is Wil on?" were met with the response of "1" for an extended period - Wil's first 40 balls faced delivering just 1 run. However, the pace picked up when Sri came in and together they took the score towards some respectability. Phil Humphreys, playing his first game of the season, played an excellent knock and was eventually out for 25. Wil eventually fell for 31 in the final over's and deserves a lot of credit for holding the innings together and taking the Exiles to a respectable score of 134.
Exiles made a good stab at defending a below-par score through some tight bowling and energetic fielding. The opening bowlers of Patel Snr and Owen bowled tidily and beat the bat on several occasions. However, the Strollers made steady progress towards the total with wickets falling intermittently but not sufficiently quickly to leave the Exiles with a realistic chance of winning. Humphreys bowled a good spell at decent pace and there were some excellent performances in the field with a particularly good catch from Whittaker. Unfortunately, Strollers had a bit too much firepower for the Exiles and the game was finished by some lusty blows by Robinson in the 33rd over.
All in all, it was a creditable performance by the Exiles given the side that was out but both games against the Strollers have been disappointing given the closeness of previous encounters between the two sides. Hopefully, normal competitiveness between the sides will be restored next season…
