On a glorious late summers day, the Exiles enjoyed a convincing victory against a strong WICC side.
The day started in peculiar fashion with no sign whatsoever of the skipper. Bradders phoned him, only to be told that he was still in bed. At first, it looked is if the skipper had let us all down, and was simply nursing a hangover after Everton's shock victory over Liverpool on Saturday. However, it is now clear that Andy's initial no-show was actually and act of inspired captaincy. Clearly after digesting the autobiographies of Brearly, Waugh and Vaughan etc. Andy was actually motivating his team after the previous weeks disappointing defeat. The message was clear - I have faith in you. You can beat them with only 10 men. You are a team of lions etc. Andy even faked a full days worth of hangover to maintain his charade, though his performance with the bat proved that he had planned all of this from the start!
In fact, Andy's master stroke went further than just motivation. Recognising that Amil is the complete tosser (sorry), his absence gave the vice captain the opportunity to maintain his 100% record, a chance which was duly taken, and the opposition were sent out to field.
At first it looked as though Andy's masterstroke was doomed to failure. Roberts went cheaply, as did Bradshaw, before Q and Amil put together a tidy partnership, Q perishing for a handsome 34. Though Amil struggled in the face of a very hostile first few deliveries from WICC's impressive opening bowler, he soon got his eye in, and made a fluent 54, before being bogged down, much to Naren's disgust, by some slow off-spin. To no-ones surprise - least of all his - Amil was out trying to force the spinner to the boundary, not long after Q and John Tither had fallen trying to force the pace.
Will and Jasper then steadied the ship, before aggressive cameos from Hodgson and Gundry pushed the exiles score close to 200. The skipper then came in and bludgeoned a demoralised attack around the ground for a spectacular 35 off 11 bowls, supported by Naren, who we were disappointed to see block one and shoulder arms to the other bowl he faced!
Overall, the exiles innings was excellent, with some good aggressive stroke play supported by excellent running between the wickets. WICC bowlers performed pretty well, but were not very well supported by their fielders, who allowed Andy to score and all run 6 late in the day.
The WICC response started reasonably well, but wickets fell quite regularly, first to Naren and Simon and then to the 'two Jonnies' (see last weeks match report). More hostile bowling from Simon in his second spell left the WICC innings in tatters, with Simon finishing with excellent figures of 3 for 19.
By now, we thought the job was done, as WICCs eleven-year-old number 11 marched to the crease. Sensing a chance to rescue his figures, Andy immediately brought himself back into the attack. However, perhaps remembering that he was supposed to have a hangover, or perhaps taking pity on the youngster, Andy was unable to get him out. Mind you, Andy wasn't the only one to suffer at the hands of youth. John T was unfortunate enough to have one of his deliveries thrashed over the top, the youngsters' stifled giggles adding insult to injury! Eventually however, he managed to soften him up with some quicker short stuff, before getting him caught at gully for 24, allowing the parched exiles to get to the bar.
