An already under strength Exiles side was hit by the late withdrawal of their champion bowler due to illness. Despite the willingness of Roberts Junior to play, the Exiles were grateful for Arnie being able to step in at late notice. Once again, Martin's limitless supply of friends allowed us to field a full eleven.
Amil strode to the middle with the opposing captain but was cut-off by the Capt. Wingfield's appearance in the distance, direct from the tube station. Given his record, fellow Exiles expected to lose the toss. Fortunately, Andy had used the gift of statistics to correctly forecast that no Exiles skipper had lost the toss at North Croydon in July while standing on one leg, in a non-leap year.
Winning the toss left him in such a state of confusion that he deferred his decision until consulting his team and the opposition scorer. The Exiles chose to bat.
Roberts and Davies got off to a brisk start with 50 coming up in 11 overs despite a tidy spell from one opening bowler. Keith inevitably brought down a yorker straight onto his bad toe early in his innings. Quentin was first out, caught at square leg rather than his customary clean bowled, for 22.
Bradshaw joined Roberts, reverting back to his trustee bat of last season (new bat can be found on Ebay under Sporting Equipment). Keith, however, soon departed for 21, yorked just before he could stamp his big toe on it. Amil and Mark then steadied the innings with some sensible cricket, aware of the relatively inexperienced line-up. After a cautious start, they managed to up the run rate, despite some tight bowling, and bat through until the 30 over mark. Amil never quite got into his usual run a ball mode and was out for 29 - obviously miscalculating his score and avoiding his fifth consecutive score in the 30's.
Chris hit a quick fire 11 with a Pieterson style smash past the non-striking batsmen for four. Jasper, Arnie, Andy and David all fell in fairly rapid succession as they sacrificed their wickets in a late run chase. They managed to keep Mark company for long enough to get his fifty and end the innings with 66 not out. The champagne moment being an effortless straight 6 out of the ground /over several houses/to south Croydon. The Exiles finished on 174, a total which left the game well balanced.
Andy and Naren opened the bowling tidily with Naren particularly economical. The run rate was kept down to 3.5 an over but we couldn't quite make the breakthrough as the North Croydon openers ended up putting around fifty. Martin came on and bowled his usual excellent line and length and Keith's bowling was brought out of retirement to bowl a full stint of overs. Martin made the breakthrough with a couple of wickets - two excellent catches at mid-off by Keith and by Amil, keeping.
At 70 for 2, Exiles looked to be in with a chance with the run rate creeping up to 5 an over with 20 overs to go. North Croydon managed to pick up the pace as the new batsmen settled in. Naren's return produced another wicket and an excellent yorker from Andy were both just a little too late to turn the game our way. Jasper and David both bowled well for a couple of overs each but were unfortunate to face well set batsman.
Despite some enthusiastic fielding, from Chris and Arnie in particular, North Croydon passed our total relatively easily in the end with almost 4 overs to spare.
The burning question is whether Exiles winning the toss has any affect on the result of a match? (Ed)
