After losing the toss, an Exiles side brimming with bowlers was asked to field first in lush and sticky overcast conditions. Opening bowlers Capt Wingfield (6-9-1) and Patel Snr (5-13-0), quickly found their groove and it wasn't long before the former forced the Caps#1 into a two step of his own as he edged a simple catch to Patel Jr behind the stumps. Some nifty fielding by Scott Jr and Patel Jr to run out the Caps#2 (who'd slipped on the damp wicket) was almost undone when, inexplicably, one or two Exiles asked Capt Wingfield if the unlucky batsman shouldn't be called back. Capt Wingfield mumbled something along the lines of "damp, slippy, should've worn spikes, hard cheese" and that was that.
First change bowlers, Thomas Snr (8-20-4) and Gundry (5-4-0), carried on where the openers left off, serving up some exquisite out-swing bowling from one end and high octane "hope-he's-wearing-a-box" pace from the other. The two easily bossed a useful looking Caps middle-order with Thomas Snr seemly able to take wickets at will. After the first 20 overs the Caps were left reeling on 50 for 5.
The next 20 overs saw more of the same. Some tight bowling by third, fourth and fifth change bowlers pressed home the Exiles superiority in the field, never allowing the opposition batsmen time or space to cut loose. After fine individual bowling performances from Phillips (6-21-1) and Scott Jr (3-8-0), and some sharp fielding from Messers Patel Jr, Scott Jr and Gundry to run out 2 more Caps, the Exiles were set a measly 100 to win off 40 overs* Exiles all out for 66.
I'm afraid the scribe of this report refuses to go into the sordid details of the Exiles batting performance but those who witnessed the debacle will know that the Caps bowlers went through the experienced Exiles middle-order like a Marriott lasagne through the Spurs 1stXI. However, credit should go to Edwards (11) and Phillips (10) both of whom chipped in noteworthy scores and of course to Mr Runs himself (and no, this isn't another reference to Spurs' bowel motions!), Mr Roberts who blocked, prodded, poked and smote his way to the days top score of 24.
Congratulations to the Cloth Caps and also to Gwyn Thomas who more than deserves the Man of the Match Award for his whole-hearted performance and nearly match winning bowling figures.
Incidentally, we all had a very nice tea of assorted sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes (the Jamaican ginger cake was excellent!) washed down with lashings of Sainsbury's red label.
