The Exiles lost to Open University by the slender margin of 10 runs, chasing a target of 129 to win in very bad light indeed. Earlier, the Exiles had whittled through an OU batting line-up that made up for its lack of talent with a steely determination to score 128 all out on a slow wicket. Pick of the bowlers was Luke Butler with career best figures of 5 for 13, while Tom Cox and Robin Airey chipped in with two wickets each and Quentin Davies took the remaining wicket. Although, the OU batting had improved, they still had one or two batsmen who had difficulty with even holding a cricket bat properly and one of their tail-enders amused Amil Patel by digging a huge trench when waiting for the ball. At tea, the Exiles really fancied chasing 129 on an admittedly "up and down" wicket, especially against a side who are not the most team-spirited and level-headed.
Open University did not disappoint in the field with their usual shouting and disharmony. However, the Exiles lost quick wickets with Bradshaw, Cox and Amil Patel all falling before the score had reached 30. John Priestland with a fluent 43 and Wil Scott mounted a recovery before Wil was bowled by a shooter for seven. Wickets continued to fall steadily in the ever worsening light before Luke Butler (12) and Quentin Davies (12 not out) ensured that, for once, the tail wagged, taking the Exiles close to their target. Alas from the seventh (!) ball of the penultimate over, Gwyn Thomas was bowled to leave Open University winners by 10 runs. Despite their victory, OU continued to argue with each other in the pub afterwards.
The Exiles have persistently struggled to overcome small totals this season. The absence of Keith Roberts has undoubtedly proven a crucial factor, which may be illustrated by the fact that the Exiles have only won twice since his injury in June. This should not disguise the fact that the remaining Exiles' batting has generally underperformed this season. Man of the match for his excellent bowling and determined batting performance was Luke Butler.
