The match was played on a rather scruffy pitch at the Old Wimbledonians home ground. But the Exiles approached the game in good spirits, buoyed by Keith Roberts' return to the side after his recovery from a life threatening finger injury earlier in the season.
Old Wimbledonians started brightly as one of their openers slashed at everything on or outside middle stump. Only good field positioning stopped a flurry of fours. Exiles spirits were quickly raised however by a piece of Patel magic - Naren decided to bowl on leg stump from around the wicket and the Old Wimbledonians opener spooned up a simple catch. [Naren was particularly pleased with this piece of bowling and asked me to include it in the match report - sorry Naren but we all thought that this was a rather obvious tactic and wondered why you didn't do it sooner...]. Both Naren and Sam bowled well. Sam being the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 27 from 9 overs. Despite a fairly constant flow of wickets Old Wimbledonians prospered off the remaining bowlers with some big hits. Gwyn distinguished himself with an excellent catch above his head out near the boundary from one of the Old Wimbledonians big hitters who was on the verge of running riot. Will picked up the wickets of the tail, dismissing the Old Wimbledonians last man (or should I say boy - he was about 6 and his pads came up past his waist) with an inspired straight ball. Old Wimbledonians finished on 178 all out.
Exiles responded with a rather uninspired team batting performance. Only performances from Keith and Chris Bunton stood out. Keith batted solidly for 42 not out. Despite professed nerves he never looked uncomfortable and played what you can only describe as a typical Keith innings, carrying his bat and anchoring the Exiles innings. Chris on the other hand distinguished himself with a completely uncharacteristic innings, surviving for 10 or so overs without (almost) ever playing a rash or false shot. Chris can count himself unlucky to have been given out in the last over by Luke lbw to a ball that pitched well outside leg stump “…but would have hit the stumps…”. Luke has obviously played football for the Corinthians at some stage and has just sense of what is right…. The Exiles finished on about 100 for 8ish but would have won if Jeff had turned up.
Match drawn. Man of the match Keith Roberts.
