Following a couple of exciting fixtures against Agricola, this was a disappointingly dull affair.
The Exiles were put in on a very dry wicket that showed signs of disintegration. Wil Scott and Mark Bradshaw batted well against some early short pitched bowling, both making use of the pull shot. The Exiles looked set for a big score reaching 66 without loss before Wil somehow edged a leg-side full toss to slip for 25. Luke Butler hit a couple of good shots before he played too early at a very slow delivery and was bowled for five. Mark Bradshaw soon followed, chipping a catch to square leg for 45 to set off an Exiles' collapse to 125 all out, which was only slightly delayed by a defensive innings of 21 from Jeff Hilson, who obviously has his eye on the batting trophy this year.
The Exiles looked to be about 30 runs short of a challenging total against an Agricola side that is usually strong in batting. Jeff Hilson made a lucky breakthrough when he dismissed a batsman with the second ball to a leg-side catch by John Priestland. However, it became apparent that the batsman had not edged the ball and on reflection it may have been better to recall the unlucky player.
Naren Patel and Jeff each took further wickets as the Exiles had Agricola in trouble at 22 for 4. There then followed some tedious cricket as Agricola scored about 10 runs from their last twenty overs, making no effort to attack the Exiles' fairly meagre total. Luke Butler, Sam Scott, and Quentin Davies each took a wicket as Agricola closed on 38 for 7.
A winning draw included some good bowling from the Exiles' attack. However, this should not the hide the fact that the Exiles' suffered another batting collapse of the sort they seem to specialise in. We can be assured that not all teams will let the Exiles off the hook so lightly.
Man of the match for a decent all-round display was Jeff Hilson.
