The exiles concluded the 1998 tour in the picturesque surroundings of Houghton on the Hill, scene of an epic clash between these two sides in 1997. Although this game did not match the drama of 1997, it was a hard-fought tussle in which the Exiles were narrowly defeated. Following Wil's football injury, Chris Bunton led the Exiles in his absence.
Jonty Tarbuck opened for the Exiles with Amil Patel, both playing reasonably before Jonty was run out for 12. Mark Bradshaw (8) and Amil (18) then looked very comfortable taking the Exiles to 54 before both they and Sam Scott were quickly dismissed as the Exiles stuttered to 62 for 4. John Priestland and Kristian Armstrong mounted a partial recovery. John's 32 saw him make a welcome return to form and included 18 runs scored from one over as one Houghton bowler thought John had a weakness to the short ball. For once Kristian was not to blame as he was run out for 10 following a rash call for a single by John Priestland. Chris Bunton, Robin Airey, Tom Cox, and Luke Butler all scored rapidly as the Exiles' innings closed on 134, a total probably about 30 runs short of what the Exiles were looking for.
The Houghton openers batted superbly against some fine bowling from Jonty Tarbuck and Sam Scott, putting on over 40 runs. Tom Cox bowled an excellent spell to take 3 for 19 from nine overs to peg Houghton back. He was well supported by Robin Airey (1 for 37). Sam Scott almost won the match for the Exiles in his second spell with two wickets, but the Houghton late order held on to win by four wickets with two overs to spare. Man of the match for the Exiles was Tom Cox.
This was the finest Exiles bowling and fielding performance of the tour, with everyone giving their all. Indeed, the Exiles can take great heart from all their performances on tour against sides of a generally better standard than that they come across in London. The bowling trio of Jonty Tarbuck, Tom Cox, and Sam Scott should be particularly congratulated for fine showings throughout. If only the Exiles could play so well (particularly in the field) all the time!!
Thanks and three cheers to John Priestland for his efforts in again organising such a successful tour. I can confirm that all those that took part appreciate John's hard work and sound organisation without which there would have been no tour.
