This was the crunch game of the weekend being played against Mark Bradshaw's old side. It was a desperately hot day again further exacerbated by the fact that the rather odd valley-like shape of the Castle Bytham ground stopped any cooling winds coming through.
Wil wisely elected to bat in such conditions and he opened with Mark Bradshaw. Wil and Mark put on 37 runs in a stand notable more for the sledging between Mark Bradshaw and the Bytham fielders than the quality of cricket. Wil holed out for 15 and Mark Bradshaw was run out for 21 to start a collapse that saw the Exiles subside to 65 for 5. Mitesh Dhanak batted very slowly to begin with, but managed to hold on with Tom Cox to restore respectability to the total. Tom was finally yorked for 16. With this dismissal, Mitesh began to open up, playing a couple of rasping pull shots to increase the run-rate with Sam Scott (14) before he was beaten for pace and bowled for a fine 21. The Exiles finished their innings with a total of 146 from 40 overs.
Jonty Tarbuck and Tom Cox began with accurate spells, with Jonty taking an early wicket. However, this brought Bytham captain, Robin Fenn, to the wicket and he put the game out of the Exiles' reach with an attacking 74, during which he was particularly severe on the unfortunate Chris Bunton. A late flurry of wickets to Sam Scott (1 for 29) and Robin "doesn't look very" Airey (3 for 7) only delayed defeat as the Exiles went down by 5 wickets. Man of the match for the Exiles was Mitesh Dhanak.
The game was followed by much drinking at Bytham. The Exiles then returned to Grantham where Wil Scott injured his foot in an impromptu game of football. The evening finished with the unlikely trio of John “Yes sir I can boogie” Priestland, “Young” Tom Cox, and “Old Man” Bradshaw visiting Crystals night-club in a partially successful attempt to discover Grantham's cultural attractions.
