Following the low-scoring games that have been a feature of this rather wet summer, this opening fixture of the tour against Caythorpe made a pleasant contrast with over 400 runs being scored on an absolutely scorching day.
Wil Scott and Mark Bradshaw made a bright start putting on 42 in the opening 10 overs. Wil looked particularly fluent before he was caught behind for 20. Tom Cox then came to the wicket and, with Mark Bradshaw, put on a record partnership of exactly 150 for the second wicket. Caythorpe's ground fielding was superb throughout, stopping Cox scoring a boundary before he had made 35. Eventually Bradshaw was caught on the deep-point boundary for a career best 94, which included only nine fours. Tom Cox then battered the Caythorpe bowlers to finish with 74 not out as the Exiles closed on 224 for 2.
The Exiles suffered the shock of seeing Jonty Tarbuck's opening two overs go for 17 runs, before the Exiles pegged Caythorpe back to 51 for 4, Sam Scott taking 2 for 20, Tarbuck 2 for 29. The youthful fifth wicket partnership batted very fluently to add over 50 runs before Amil Patel dismissed a couple of batsmen. However, the strong Caythorpe tail mounted a blistering attack on the Exiles to finish on 212 for 8, only 12 runs short. A key feature of the Exiles performance was the high standard of the catching with no chances being missed, Luke Butler particularly impressing with two catches.
As in 1997, the Exiles made another good start to the annual tour. This was a fine performance against a Caythorpe side stronger than the scores would suggest. The Exiles also received a series of unforgettable lectures about life, haircuts, local cricket teams, parts of the human anatomy and "knobbly bits" by a humorous Caythorpe spectator.
Man of the match for his highest ever score was Mark Bradshaw.
