Following the cancellation of the Stratford Casuals fixture, the Exiles met Old Rutlishians at the Civil Service Sports Ground. The Exiles introduced three debutants in a solid-looking side that also included Exiles veteran James Marsh.

In the absence of Wil Scott, the Exiles were led by Robin Airey, who elected to bat on a flat wicket. Mark Bradshaw (37) and Mitesh Dhanak (10) opened for the Exiles and put on 52 in their differing styles before both were dismissed in quick succession. Kristian Armstrong played a quick 21 and Amil Patel batted very correctly to top score with 39. Following a steady fall of late middle order wickets including James Airey for an eccentric five, a productive ninth wicket stand from Dave Hawes and Dom Herrington took the Exiles to a final score of 186 for 8. Given the quality of the conditions and bowling attack (including Naren Patel, who had been loaned to Old Rutlishians for the day), this was about par for the course.

The Exiles total looked much bigger however, when David Hawes and Stuart Duggan dismissed both openers to reduce the ORs to 1 for 2. The Exiles then became a little ragged in the field as the batsmen mounted a recovery. The introduction of Dom Herrington to the attack pegged back the ORs as he took 4 for 32. Robin Airey and Amil Patel both bowled well to take a wicket apiece as the ORs finished on 125 for 9 to salvage a draw. Their saviour was Naren Patel who, in the face of some considerable sledging, scored a brave 14 not out which included a cracking straight drive off his son Amil.

Old Rutlishians made admirable opponents for the Saturday XI and I hope we can play them again.

Man of the match for the Exiles was Amil Patel.
