The Exiles travelled to Eltham for a fixture against our old friends Victor Trumper who have now merged with another club to become Brown Mole Memorial CC aka The Brown Trumpers. Brown Mole won the toss and elected to bat. The two Thomas's, Gwyn and Andrew, opened the bowling with tidy spells, Andrew making the first breakthrough.
However, Brown Mole looked very ominous as the bowlers were punished for pitching too short. It required a fine spell from Chris Bunton of 3 for 23, including the prized wicket of Hodgkiss, to keep the Exiles in the game. Wil Scott and Robin Airey also bowled well to keep the runs down, demonstrating the virtues of bowling a full length. A final blast by Andrew Thomas brought him another wicket as he finished with 2 for 26 and Brown Mole completed their 40 overs with a score of 181 for 5. Despite the fact that they maintained their discipline and never gave up, the Exiles' fielding could only be described as adequate as several catches were missed.
Although the Exiles had a weakened batting line-up, the Brown Mole total was not impossible, given a fast outfield and short boundaries. The Exiles were never in the hunt from the moment Mark Bradshaw was caught behind first ball to start a procession of batsmen only slightly delayed by Wil Scott (20) and Quentin Davies (8 not out). Miles Hodgkiss bowled very accurately to take 5 for 5 from eight overs, as the Exiles unbeaten start to the season went out of the window, the innings closing on 51 all out.
It must be said that when the Exiles lose they certainly do it in style. We must ensure that we do not capitulate so abjectly in future. Quentin Davies and Wil Scott showed they way to play in such situations with a mixture of sound defence and sensible aggression. Wil's innings and his good bowling win him man of the match.
