Much excitement in the Exiles side before even a ball was bowled. We arrived at the ground to discover that one Scott was sporting a cruel black eye - courtesy of a wicked (!) delivery in the nets from Keith Roberts - while the other one had dropped out, feeling “unwell”. This particular cloud had a very silver lining, because it meant we were graced with the first appearance of the season by Jonty Tarbuck, sporting a very natty pair of shorts (apparently he didn't think Wil's whites would fit!?), and bringing our complement of specialist bowlers up to seven. Not surprisingly, therefore, we soon reduced Putney to 49-7, Jeff Hilson having devastated the middle order with 4-10 in four overs. Honorary mentions go to Jonty who bowled with his customary meanness and penetration, and Andy Thomas who was again fiery without any luck. Putney finally stumbled to 90 odd all out.
The batting relied heavily, as often in the early season, on John Priestland, who recorded his fourth score in a row of around forty. He was ably supported by Jeff, until he was stumped by their keeper who was sharp throughout. Others played themselves in, only to get themselves out, but at 80-4 the game should have been in the bag. Exiles' generosity intervened, and it took a nerveless cover drive from Naren to secure the victory with only two wickets remaining.
Man of the match was Jeff Hilson.
