This was without doubt the most topsy-turvy game I have ever played for the Exiles as they scrambled a one-wicket win against all odds.

Keith Roberts captained the Exiles for the first time and elected to field on winning the toss. It was agreed that as Morden had two extra players, this would be a twelve a side game.

Owing to the late arrival of Naren Patel, Keith opened the bowling with himself and debutant Dave Hawes. Dave did get the ball to swing, but was punished when he dropped short as the Morden openers put on 54 for the first wicket. However, the game was turned on its head when Dave took a hat-trick.

Naren Patel had no luck in a spell of nine wicketless overs and he and Dave Hawes were replaced by Luke Butler and Quentin Davies. Both Luke and Quentin bowled tidily to whittle through the Morden middle and late order. Only a last wicket stand of 35 lifted Morden to 151 all out. Quentin Davies finished with 4 for 14, Luke Butler 4 for 30.

The Exiles' fielding had been reasonable throughout the Morden innings with John Cook's catch at deep-midwicket the highlight. However, a couple of edges should have been held behind the wicket, and the less said about Mitesh Dhanak booting the ball over the boundary the better.

There was a general mood of optimism in the Exiles camp as Keith Roberts and Mitesh Dhanak opened the innings. However, the Exiles made a disastrous start as the three most experienced batsmen in the side; Roberts, Armstrong, and Bradshaw were dismissed for one run between them. Dickon Goodwin, John Cook, and Steve Yandel all partnered Mitesh in small stands that seemed to be taking the Exiles towards a measure of respectability. Mitesh played a fine defensive innings to hold the Exiles together when complete disaster seemed to be looming. My only criticism of Mitesh would be that he could improve his running between the wickets, but this should not detract from the praise which he deserved for rescuing the Exiles.

Following Mitesh's dismissal for a career-best 41, the game was completely turned on its head by a quick stand between Quentin Davies and Luke Butler who scored a brutal 16. Quentin and Naren Patel (11 not out) then knocked off the runs with two overs to spare to complete an unbelievable one wicket victory. Quentin finished unbeaten on 25, having played some fine on-drives, and for this and his good bowling spell he wins the man of the match award.
