Following last season’s fine victory against WICC, the Exiles had high hopes of defeating this strong side. These hopes were quickly dashed as the Exiles’ bowling was flayed all over South London.
The Exiles fielded first and the WICC openers put on 100 for the first wicket at six an over. The WICC progress was only temporarily halted by the fall of four quick wickets around the 120 mark. WICC continued to pile on the runs, taking 19 from one Nick Creak over as they closed on 274 for 8. None of the Exiles medium-pacers Nick Creak, Naren Patel, Matt Cook, or Wil Scott bowled badly, but were simply the victims of excellent batting as they went for five or six runs an over. However, Chris Bunton took a vicious battering as he conceded 73 runs from his eight overs. The Exiles fielded disappointingly, but it was by no means their worst performance in the face of such slaughter.
The Exiles required a brisk start, and it looked promising when Mark Bradshaw hit the third ball he faced for six. However, neither Mark (17) or Keith Roberts (52) could maintain the necessary momentum despite putting on 50 in 12 overs, an excellent start in normal circumstances. Andy Loukes was run out for nought in bizarre circumstances, and it was left to John Priestland (35 not out) to play for pride as the Exiles closed on 152 for 6. Except Bradshaw’s early six, the highlight of the innings was a disagreement between John Priestland and Keith Roberts over the viability of a short single.
Man of the match was Exiles’ top-scorer, Keith Roberts.
