On winning the toss Wingfield captaining in Bradshaw's absence elected to field first in order to force a result in this timed game.
Chamberlain opened the bowling on a suspect pitch with an uneven bounce and the second delivery induced wild swing from the batsman which flew over the slips for 4 and that set the pattern for the rest of the game. All the early scoring shots were through the slips. Exiles made an early breakthrough when Patel bowled the opening batsman with a ball which cut back sharply to hit the off stump. Seeing that Morden were making slow progress, Wingfield decided to try out some new bowlers and replaced Chamberlain with Stiffell who bowled with some style and accuracy conceding only 2 runs in his 3 overs. At the other end Patel was replaced by Thomas M who as usual bowled with enthusiasm and was unlucky not to get a wicket. Stiffell was quickly replaced by the Exile's destroyer in chief, Butler. Seeing a ball a bit wide of the off stump Patel shouted to Butler, "fast and straight please" and this advice was heeded. From then on Butler never looked back and hit the stumps 3 times including 2 wickets in two balls. Exiles used 9 bowlers in this game and Morden's Parish's innings concluded on 126 for 8.
In reply Exiles made a very slow start with Roberts and Butler scoring only 11 runs from the first 8 overs. Unable to pierce the boundary Butler tried to play a lofted drive but failed to clear mid off and was caught. The next batsman Fitzgerald took a wild swish at the very first ball and was bowled for a duck. In the absence of some frontline batsman Thomas M was promoted to fill in the number 4 batting position.
Thomas played with great determination making considerable use of his thighs instead of the bat but somehow managed to score 3 runs before getting bowled. Exiles were 23 for 3 and looked in trouble, but Sammut next in, showed no respect for the quality bowling which had claimed 3 wickets. He straight away put them to sword and scored a quick fire 60 with two huge 6s. In the mean time Roberts held the other end until his marathon vigil ended for 20 runs when he was caught at square leg. Wingfield followed him for 7 and when Chamberlain and Stiffell followed quickly it looked Sammut might run out of partners. In the event Sammut decided to finish off the game by trying to hoist a big six when the score was 121 but was well caught. This brought the wise old man, Naren Patel to the wicket to join Phillips when 6 runs were required. Phillips and Patel played some sensible cricket and knocked the 6 runs required for victory without any alarm.
