The Exiles met their old enemy, DCMS, and for the second season running played extremely well to defeat DCMS’s motley crew. More sensible cricket from Jeff Hilson (3 for 32), well supported by Matt Cook, helped reduce the DCMS innings to tatters at 44 for 5. The DCMS stalwarts of Barry Fitzgerald (32) and Shaun Cove (53) fought back well, with Fitzgerald dishing some heavy punishment to Keith Roberts’ spinners. A last wicket partnership of 40 between Joe Gillam and Alex Towers helped DCMS to a challenging total of 168.

In response Keith Roberts, Wil Scott, and Amil Patel all made starts, before each was dismissed in the teens as three quick wickets put us in trouble at 60 for 4. However, Luke Butler (12) defended stoutly and helped Mark Bradshaw (53) put on 60 make the game safe. Luke and Mark both took advantage of some eccentric DCMS ground fielding, and their stand was notable for sledging from both sides and the “bowling-marker” incident between Barry Fitzgerald and Trevor Dawes. With the loss of Bradshaw and Butler, most Exiles would have settled for the draw, but Robin Airey (23no) had other ideas as he smashed the DCMS fast bowler all over the place. Jeff Hilson struck two fours in the final over as we reached our target with a ball to spare.
