Terence Moynihan – 5-fer interview

On 3 August 2014, Exiles new recruit Terence Moynihan took 5 for 12 – with all wickets clean bowled – as the Exiles beat Ploughmans CC. This was the first 5 wicket haul by an Exiles bowler since July 2012. The Exiles website caught up with Terence to hear his thoughts on the feat:

Terence, very well bowled, it must’ve been a very good feeling to get a 5 wicket haul?

Yes thanks very much, it certainly is an awesome feeling to get a five wicket haul, one that I will never forget and it will live long in my memory as one of the better cricketing days that I’ve had. Once I got my fourth wicket I was so eager and keen to claim my fifth scalp.

Have you had many in your cricketing career to date?

That is my first ever five wicket haul and I’ve been close a few times on four wickets but everything came together so nicely and the cricketing gods were smiling at me on the day.

You took all your wickets clean bowled – is this your usual preferred wicket-taking method?

I like mixing it up when I’m bowling and I will try and work out which shot the batsman likes playing most and bowl accordingly but if memory serves me correctly most of my wickets have been caught behind or bowled.

Have you played a lot of cricket in your life so far? What do you make of bowling in English conditions?

I’ve played a fair amount of cricket, not as much as some of you guys haha and I didn’t play much cricket in my school in South Africa as I couldn’t make the side in Senior School cricket but I joined a club three years after that and played five seasons of second side club cricket where my passion for the game developed. I played a season in Milton Keynes for a Sunday Side which was my first taste of English conditions and its generally cooler in the summer here compared to hot and humid conditions back in South Africa so its more bowler friendly conditions here and you can push a bit of a longer spell. The wickets do offer for both bat and ball.

How have you enjoyed your first few games with the Exiles?

I’ve really enjoyed my first few games and thanks to Bernard for telling me about the club. All the Exiles players are really good cricketers and a great bunch of lads and they have all made me feel very welcome. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.

Any cricketing targets ahead?

I hope to score a fifty this season and get my wicket haul up to about 20 wickets for the season.

Terence, many thanks for your time, and here’s hoping for a few more 5 wicket hauls from you along the way in your Exiles career!

Terence eats Ploughmans for lunch…

A superb spell of 5 for 12 (all bowled) from Terence Moynihan led Exiles to a comfortable 90 run victory over Ploughmans CC on Sunday.

After being inserted, an Exiles team full of bowlers amassed 213 for 7 off their 40 overs, with 3 contributions at the top of the order – from Chris Plume (50), Bernard Leuvennink (46) and Will Kent (40) and a fine late acceleration from Phil “not a batsman” Chamberlain with 27 not out from 15 balls.

Ploughmans got off to a fast start in reply, but were soon stopped in their tracks as Phil Ling (2 for 29) and Marcin Zieleniewski (1 for 25) started getting the old ball wobbling on the dusty track.

And it was left to Simon Rowland (2 for 14) and Moynihan with his 5-fer to run through the rest of the Ploughmans batting line up, as they slipped from 95 for 3 to 123 all out, with all remaining wickets bowled – in fact 9 of the 10 wickets were bowled, much to Naren Patels delight.

Next week’s fixture is up in the air, but Exiles are hoping to get a solution sorted to continue to build on recent momentum.

Dominic Hodgson – maiden Exiles 50 interview..

On 27 July 2014, Dominic Hodgson hit 75 not out off 49 balls, to become the 8th different player (after Plume, Wingfield, Gundry, Williams, Kent, Leuvennink & Shete) to score a 50 for the Exiles this season – and the 6th to score his maiden one for the club this year. The Exiles press office caught up with Dominic for his thoughts:

Dom, very well played – it must’ve been a good feeling to get your maiden 50 for the club – after a couple of recent near misses?

Absolutely! Although the couple of near misses gave me the confidence moving forward that a 50 was just around the corner. Those two scores in the 40’s were for a losing cause so this 50 feels that much better knowing it went towards a win, albeit against a weakened opponent.

Any nerves as you approached the landmark?

Not really. Will and I had seen off their quicks and were filling our boots against their weaker bowlers. By the time I got to 50, I was scoring at a good rate so the landmark came up too quickly to get nervous.

Have you made many 50’s in your cricketing career so far?

It’s been a while Andy! I haven’t played cricket, before playing for Exile’s, since I was 13. Although there was the odd 50 in there and even a century back then, it was too long ago to really remember them properly.

What are your favourite shots?

It’s got to be the cut and the pull. I love it when the bowler drops short or gives any width. But then again don’t we all!

How have you enjoyed your first season with the Exiles so far?

It’s been brilliant being a part of this team, and it’s great to start putting some contributions forward. Hopefully there are more contributions I can make this season.

You used to be a pretty serious tennis player – have you played against anyone famous or at any famous venues?

I’ve played a practice match against Tim Henman in the latter part of his career, which will always go down as my favourite practice, because Tim was an absolute hero of mine. I got a couple of games too. I guess the obvious place is Wimbledon when I played in Junior Wimbledon. The best thing tennis gave me though is the chance to travel the world, not necessarily tennis venues themselves or personnel.

Do you think your tennis ability has helped your batting?

It certainly has, Andy. I haven’t spent many hours in a net’s session, but I’ve spent many an hour on a tennis court and that has had to of had some impact on my batting technique.

What are your cricketing targets going forward?

Just to keep making solid contributions. There’s no milestone I have in my head just yet, but I love batting and hope to keep this run going.

Dominic, thanks & once again very well played – and here’s to plenty more runs from you in an Exiles shirt!

Thanks Andy! Good luck in the next couple of games.

Hodgson thwarts Imperials attack…

Dominic Hodgson crashed 75 not out off 49 balls, with 15 fours, as Exiles got back to winning ways with a surprisingly comfortable win against an admittedly under-strength Surbiton Imperials.

Chris Plume, captain for the day, made the perhaps optimistic choice to bowl first on winning the toss, but this decision was soon vindicated as Surbiton were bowled out for only 119, with the wickets shared by Andy Wingfield (2 for 20), Terence Moynihan (3 for 27), Bernard Leuvennink (3 for 10) and Steve Parkinson (1 for 4).

Exiles – inevitably – had a quick stumble in response slipping to 16 for 2, before a quickfire partnership of 104 between Hodgson and Will Kent (24 not out) saw the Exiles home.

Next up are Merton at Nursery Road.
